Disabling Air Bag System

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 120 other vehicles, including the 2002 Volkswagen Passat, 2002 Volkswagen New Beetle, 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, 2002 Volkswagen Golf, and 2002 Volkswagen GTI. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure wheels are in straight-ahead position. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Remove ignition key.
  2. Remove AIR BAG fuse. On Esteem, fuse is in fuse block located behind lower left side of instrument panel. See Figure. On Grand Vitara, Vitara and XL-7, there is a single fuse located in an the air bag harness, behind lower left edge of driver's side knee bolster. See Figure.
  3. On Esteem, remove left side cap from steering wheel. Release locking lever and disconnect Yellow connector for driver air bag module. See Figure.
  4. On Grand Vitara, Vitara and XL-7, locate Yellow 2-pin connector behind lower edge of driver's side knee bolster (below steering column). Disconnect Yellow 2-pin connector for driver air bag module. See Figure.
  5. On all models, pull out glove box while pushing in both right and left sides. Release locking lever and disconnect Yellow connector for passenger air bag module (located in glove box opening). See Figure.
