WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Remove Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Clean off any particles or metal shavings from sensor. Reinstall VSS. Connect scan tool to DLC-2. Monitor FREQUENCY value and VSS PID. See VSS SPECIFICATIONS (PROTEGE & PROTEGE5)
table. If FREQUENCY value is out of specification, check for open or short circuit in wiring harness. Go to step 3
. Repair or replace as necessary.VSS SPECIFICATIONS (PROTEGE & PROTEGE5)
VSS PID Frequency 10 MPH About 60 Hz 20 MPH About 120 Hz 30 MPH About 180 Hz - Power Supply Voltage Inspection
Disconnect VSS connector. Turn ignition switch on. Measure voltage at VSS 3-pin harness connector terminal "B" (Violet/Red wire). If 4.5-5.5 volts is present, check for open or short in wiring harness. If sensor voltage is not as specified, repair wiring harness between VSS and PCM. - Open/Short Circuit Inspection
Check for short/open circuit between following:- Open in White/Red wire between VSS harness connector terminal "A" and main relay terminal "D".
- Open in Black/Orange wire between VSS harness connector terminal "C" and ground.
- Short to ground in White/Red wire between VSS harness connector terminal "A" and main relay terminal "D".
If open/short circuit is found, repair or replace wiring harness. If open/short circuit is not found, go to next step.
- Sensor Rotor Inspection
Remove VSS. Shift selector lever to "N" position. Inspect sensor rotor surface through hole for VSS while rotating front wheel by hand. Ensure sensor rotor surface does not have metal particles or shavings and is not cracked or damaged. Clean or replace sensor rotor as necessary. If sensor rotor is okay, replace VSS.
