Purge Solenoid Valve - Circuit Inspection

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Procedure is for Miata, Protege and Protege5 only. Manufacturer does not supply testing for other models.
  1. Remove PCM. See COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On Protege and Protege5 only, connect 104-pin Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) between PCM and PCM 104-pin harness connector.
  2. Check for open or short in following circuits:

    • Open Circuit

Between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "A" and main relay 4-pin harness connector terminal "D", through X13 in line connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
    • Between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 67 on Protege and Protege5 (terminal No. 3C on Miata), through X13 in line connector.
    • Short Circuit

Short to ground between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "A" and main relay 4-pin harness connector terminal "D", through X13 in line connector (on Protege and Protege5).
    • Short to ground between purge solenoid valve harness connector terminal "B" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 67 on Protege and Protege5 (terminal No. 3C on Miata), through X13 in line connector.
