Test 3: A/C Always On

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Tribute. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) Tester (49-7088-0A0), or scan tool, to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn function selector switch to OFF position. Turn ignition on. Perform PCM self-diagnostic test. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Retrieve and note continuous DTCs. If DTC P1464 exists, go to next step. If DTC P1464 does not exist, go to step  7.
  2. Monitor PCM Parameter Identification A/C Cycling Switch (PID ACCS). Turn ignition off. If PCM PID ACCS reads ON, go to next step. If PCM PID ACCS does not read ON, go to step  7.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector G175. Turn ignition on. Turn function selector switch to OFF position. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector G175 terminal No. 41 (Dark Green/Orange wire). See Figure. If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect function selector switch 8-pin harness connector G294a. Turn ignition on. Monitor PCM PID ACCS. If PCM PID ACCS reads ON, go to next step. If PCM PID ACCS does not read ON, replace function selector switch. Recheck system operation.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C clutch cycling switch 4-pin harness connector G130. Turn ignition on. Monitor PCM PID ACCS. If PCM PID ACCS reads ON, go to next step. If PCM PID ACCS does not read ON, repair short to power in Pink wire between function selector switch and A/C clutch cycling switch. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect dual-pressure switch 4-pin harness connector G1062. Turn ignition on. Monitor PCM PID ACCS. If PCM PID ACCS reads ON, repair short to power in Dark Green/Orange wire between dual-pressure switch and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation. If PCM PID ACCS does not read ON, repair short to power in Red/Yellow wire between dual-pressure switch and A/C clutch cycling switch. Recheck system operation.
  7. Remove A/C clutch relay from Battery Junction Box (BJB). Start engine and let idle. If A/C compressor is operating, install A/C relay and go to step  11. If A/C compressor is not operating, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance in Pink/Yellow wire between ground and A/C clutch relay harness connector G1008 terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, replace A/C clutch relay. Recheck system operation.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector G175. Measure resistance between ground and A/C clutch relay socket terminal No. 2 (Pink/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Pink/Yellow wire between PCM and A/C clutch relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect all PCM connectors. Check for corrosion, pushed out pins and poor terminal contact. Repair as necessary. Connect all connectors. Recheck system operation. If symptom still exists, replace PCM. If symptom does not exists, system is operating properly at this time.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/C clutch 2-pin harness connector G100. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and A/C clutch harness connector G100 Gray/White wire terminal. If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, check and adjust clutch air gap to .014-.029" (.36-.74 mm). Recheck system operation.
  12. Remove A/C clutch relay from BJB. Turn ignition off. Measure voltage between ground and A/C clutch harness connector Gray/White wire terminal. If any voltage exists, repair short to power in Gray/White wire between central junction box and A/C clutch relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If no voltage exists, replace A/C clutch relay. Recheck system operation.
