Possible Causes

Driver-side air bag module inflator No. 1 malfunction can be caused by open or short circuit in wiring harness between clockspring and SAS control module, clockspring malfunction, driver-side air bag module inflator No. 1 malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect driver-side air bag module inflator No. 1

    Using scan tool, inspect resistance for PID/DATA monitor D-ABAGR. See PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD  under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is 1.5-3.7 ohms and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance 1.5-3.7 ohms and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If resistance is not 1.5-3.7 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Inspect driver-side air bag module connector

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect driver-side air bag module connector. If driver-side air bag module connector is damaged, replace air bag system wiring harness. If driver-side air bag module connector is not damaged, go to next step.
  3. Isolate malfunction

    Connect leads of two 2 ohm resistors across terminals of 2-pin clockspring connectors for inflators No. 1 and 2. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTCs B1916, B1932, B1934 and/or B1936 are retrieved, replace air bag system wiring harness and go to next step. If DTCs B1916, B1932, and/or B1934 are not retrieved, replace right seat belt pretensioner.
  4. Inspect clockspring

    Perform clockspring inspection. See CLOCKSPRING INSPECTION  under COMPONENT TESTING. If clockspring is okay, go to next step. If clockspring is not okay, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Inspect wiring harness between clockspring & SAS control module

    Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1V and clockspring connector No. 1, terminal No. 1C. See Figure & Fig 1 . Check for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1S and clockspring connector No. 1, terminal No. 1D. If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace air bag system wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. If wiring harness is okay and past present malfunction diagnosis, test is complete.
