Possible Causes

Fuse No. 18 (METER, 10 amp) malfunction, instrument cluster malfunction, improper connection of connectors between instrument cluster and SAS control module, open or short circuit in wiring harness between fuse No. 18 and instrument cluster, open or short circuit in wiring harness between instrument cluster and SAS control module or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect fuse No. 18

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Remove fuse No. 18 and inspect fuse. If fuse No. 18 is okay, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If fuse is not okay, replace fuse.

  2. Inspect for continuity between fuse No. 18 & instrument cluster

    Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Access instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3J. See Figure . If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9 volts, repair appropriate wiring harness.

  3. Inspect wiring harness between instrument cluster & SAS control module

    Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Disconnect instrument cluster connectors. Measure for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1T and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3R. See Figure & Figure . If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace air bag system wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay, go to next step.

  4. Inspect AIR BAG warning light

    Connect instrument cluster connectors. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Inspect AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light is illuminated, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light is not illuminated, replace instrument cluster.

  5. Inspect AIR BAG warning light

    Connect a jumper wire between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 3R. Inspect AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light goes out and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If AIR BAG warning light goes out and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If AIR BAG warning light stays on, replace instrument cluster.
