Possible Causes
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mazda RX-8. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Open or short circuit in wiring harness between passenger-side air bag module and SAS control module, passenger-side air bag module inflator No. 2 malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.
- Inspect passenger-side air bag module inflator No. 1
Using scan tool, inspect resistance for PID/DATA monitor P-ABAGR2. See PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is 1.4-2.9 ohms and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 1.4-2.9 ohms and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If resistance is not 1.4-2.9 ohms, go to next step. - Inspect passenger-side air bag module connector
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove passenger-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect passenger-side air bag module connector. If passenger-side air bag module connector is cracked or chipped, replace wiring harness. If passenger-side air bag module connector is not cracked or chipped, go to next step. - Isolate malfunction
Connect leads of two 2 ohm resistors across terminals of 2-pin passenger-side air bag module connectors for inflators No. 1 and 2. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, inspect PID/DATA monitor OD-PAB2-ST. If PID readings are normal, replace passenger-side air bag module. If PID readings are not normal, go to next step. - Inspect SAS control module
Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. Connect passenger-side air bag module connector. Connect negative battery cable. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTCs B2229, B2231, B2233 or B2235 are retrieved and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. If DTCs B2229, B2231, B2233 or B2235 are retrieved and performing past present malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If DTCs B2229, B2231, B2233 or B2235 are not retrieved, test is complete.
