Diagnostic Procedure

CAUTION:
  • When disconnecting the connector, verify that there is no looseness, damage, deformation, corrosion, or poor connection of the connector terminals.
  • When inspecting the DLC-2, touch it with a paper clip or similar thin pin without directly inserting a tester into the terminals.
Step Inspection Action
1 VERIFICATION BEFORE SERVICING 
  • Are any DTCs, except the following, displayed?
    • U0010:88
    • U001088
    • U0498:68
    • 16:Er12
    • 26:Er81
Yes Verify the malfunctioning part referring to "DETERMINING MALFUNCTIONING PART (MS-CAN)".

No
  • Store the currently displayed DTC.
  • Attempt to drive the vehicle based on the repair order form, then go to the next step.
2 RE-PERFORM DTC INSPECTION 
  • Clear the DTC using the M-MDS.
  • Perform the DTC inspection using the M-MDS and the input/output check mode.
  • Is DTC U0010:88, U001088, U0498:68, 16:Er12, or 26Er81 displayed?
Yes Go to Step 4.
No Go to the next step.
3 VERIFY MODULE IN WHICH DTC DISPLAYED 
  • Is DTC U0010:88, U001088, U0498:68, 16:Er12, or 26:Er81 displayed for 2 or more units?
Yes Perform the procedure for "Action for Non-repeatable Malfunctions" because there is the possibility of a temporary short to the power supply or ground in the CAN-related wiring harness. (See FOREWORD [MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM] .)
No Explain to the customer that the module which displayed the DTC had a temporary malfunction.
4 INSPECT MS-CAN LINE RESISTANCE 
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Measure the resistance between the DTC-2 terminals L and K.
  • Is the resistance 59-65 ohms?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Go to Step 6.
5 INSPECT MS-CAN LINE FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Verify continuity between the following terminals:
    • Between DLC-2 terminal L and body ground
    • Between DLC-2 terminal K and body ground
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Determine the location of the short to ground referring to "Determining Short to Ground Location" because a short to ground in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.

No Go to Step 7.
6 INSPECT MS-CAN LINE FOR OPEN CIRCUIT OR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS 
  • Measure the resistance between the DLC-2 terminals L and K.
  • Is the resistance 118-130 ohms?
Yes Go to Step 8.
No Go to Step 9.
7 INSPECT MS-CAN LINE FOR OPEN OR SHORT CIRCUIT TO POWER SUPPLY 
  • Connect the negative battery cable.
  • Switch the ignition ON.
  • Measure the voltage at DLC-2 terminals L and K.
  • Is the voltage between 1.5-3.5 V?
Yes Determine the location of the open circuit referring to "Determining Open Circuit Location" because an open circuit in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.

No Determine the location of the short circuit to the power supply referring to "Determining Short Circuit Location" because a short to ground in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.

8 INSPECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND INFORMATION DISPLAY RESISTANCES 
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Disconnect the instrument cluster and information display connectors.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster connector terminals C-E (part side).
  • Measure the resistance between the information display connector terminals J-L (part side).
  • Is the resistance 118-130 ohms?
Yes Determine the location of the open circuit referring to "Determining Open Circuit Location" because an open circuit in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.

No Instrument cluster resistance has malfunction 

Information display resistance has malfunction 

9 INSPECT MS-CAN LINE FOR OPEN CIRCUIT OR SHORT BETWEEN CIRCUITS 
  • Verify the continuity between DLC-2 terminals L and K.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Determine the location of the short between circuits referring to "Determining Location of Short between Circuits" because a short between circuits in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.

No Determine the location of the open circuit referring to "Determining Open Circuit Location" because an open circuit in the MS-CAN line can be considered the cause.
