Diagnostic procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Mazda 6. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Verify related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability
  • Is any related repair information available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
2 INSPECT FUSE 
  • Switch the ignition to off
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable
  • Inspect the following fuses
    • MAIN 125 A fuse
    • FAN 60 A fuse
  • Are there any malfunction?
Yes Replace the malfunctioning fuses, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step
3 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No 1 connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
4 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 POWER CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Install the fuses
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable
  • Switch the ignition to ON (engine off)
  • Measure the voltage between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is the voltage B+? 
Yes Go to the next step
No Replace or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 10.
5 INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Switch the ignition to off.
  • Disconnect the PCM connector
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step.
6 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 10
No Go to the next step
7 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY 
  • Switch the ignition to ON (engine off)
  • Measure the voltage between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is there any voltage?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to power supply, then go to Step 10.
No Go to the next step
8 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 
Yes Replace the cooling fan motor No. 1, then go to Step 10.
(See COOLING FAN COMPONENT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L5] .)
No Go to the next step.
9 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Switch the ignition to off.
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No. 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and PCM terminal 1R (wiring harness-side).
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to the next step.
10 VERIFY DTC TROUBLESHOOTING COMPLETED 
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  • Install the fuses
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS.
  • Perform the KOEO/KOER self test (See KOEO/KOER SELF TEST [L5] .)
  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
(See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L5] .)
No Go to the next step.
11 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 
Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
(See DTC TABLE [L5] .)
No DTC troubleshooting completed.


STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 VERIFY RELATED REPAIR INFORMATION AVAILABILITY 
  • Verify related Service Bulletins and/or on-line repair information availability
  • Is any related repair information available?
Yes Perform repair or diagnosis according to the available repair information.
  • If the vehicle is not repaired, go to the next step.
No Go to the next step.
2 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Remove the fan control module relay
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step.
3 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Fan control module relay is removed.
  • Switch the ignition to ON (engine off).
  • Measure the voltage between fan control module relay (battery side) and body ground.
  • Is the voltage B+? 
Yes Go to the next step
No Inspect the MAIN 125 A fuse and FAN 60A fuse.
  • If the fuse is melt:
    • Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground.
    • Replace the fuse.
  • If the fuse is deterioration:
    • Replace the fuse.
  • If the fuse is normal:
    • Replace or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit.

Go to Step 17.
4 INSPECT WHETHER MALFUNCTION IS IN FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL SIGNAL OR ELSEWHERE 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Switch the ignition to off.
  • Inspect the fan control module relay (BCM side) terminal voltage
  • Is the voltage B+? 
Yes Go to Step 7.
No Go to the next step.
5 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Disconnect the BCM connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module relay (BCM side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to I ground, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step.
6 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Fan control module relay is removed
  • Disconnect the BCM connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between fan control module relay (BCM side) and BCM terminal 7B.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Replace the BCM.
(See BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
Go to Step 17.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
7 INSPECT FAN CONTROL MODULE RELAY 
  • Inspect the fan control module relay. (See RELAY INSPECTION .)
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Replace the fan control module relay, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step.
8 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No 1 connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step.
9 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Fan control module relay is removed.
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No 1 connector
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal D (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step.
10 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal D (wiring harness-side) and fan control module relay.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
11 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No 1 connector.
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal A (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step.
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open I circuit, then go to Step 17.
12 INSPECT PCM CONNECTOR CONDITION 
  • Disconnect the PCM connector.
  • Inspect for poor connection (such as damaged/pulled-out pins, corrosion).
  • Is there any malfunction"?
Yes Repair or replace the terminal and/or connector, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step
13 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No. 1 connector
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground.
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to ground, then go to Step 17
No Go to the next step.
14 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO POWER SUPPLY 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No. 1 connector
  • Measure the voltage between cooling fan motor No 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and body ground
  • Is there any voltage"?
Yes Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible short to power supply, then go to Step 17.
No Go to the next step
15 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR OPEN CIRCUIT 
  • Disconnect the cooling fan motor No 1 connector.
  • Disconnect the PCM connector
  • Inspect for continuity between cooling fan motor No. 1 terminal C (wiring harness-side) and PCM terminal 1R (wiring harness-side)
  • Is there continuity?
Yes Go to the next step
No Repair or replace the wiring harness for a possible open circuit, then go to Step 17.
16 INSPECT COOLING FAN MOTOR NO. 1 
Yes Replace the cooling fan motor No. 1, then go to the next 1 step

No Go to the next step
17 VERIFY DTC TROUBLESHOOTING COMPLETED 
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  • Install the fuses.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Clear the DTC from the PCM memory using the M-MDS
  • Perform the KOEO/KOER self test.

    (See KOEO/KOER SELF TEST [L5] .)

  • Is the same DTC present?
Yes Replace the PCM, then go to the next step.
(See PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [L5] .)
No Go to the next step.
18 VERIFY AFTER REPAIR PROCEDURE 
Yes Go to the applicable DTC inspection.
(See DTC TABLE [L5] .)
No DTC troubleshooting completed.
