Shift Solenoids SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 And Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Solenoid 5R44E And 5R55E Only

NOTE:

Read and record all DTCs. All digital TR sensor and VSS DTCs must be repaired before entering output state control (OSC).

DTC P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0743, P0750, P0751, P0751, P0755, P0760, P0761, P0765 DETECTION CONDITION AND POSSIBLE CAUSE

DTC P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0743, P0750, P0751, P0751, P0755, P0760, P0761, P0765 SHIFT SOLENOIDS SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) SOLENOID 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY
DETECTION CONDITION
  • P0731 indicates 1st gear error.
  • P0732 indicates 2nd gear error.
  • P0733 indicates 3rd gear error.
  • P0734 indicates 4th gear error.
  • P0735 indicates fifth gear error.
  • P0743 indicates TCC solenoid circuit failure.
  • P0750 indicates SS1 solenoid circuit failure.
  • P0753 indicates SS1 function failure.
  • P0755 indicates SS2 solenoid circuit failure.
  • P0758 indicates SS2 function failure.
  • P0760 indicates SS3 solenoid circuit failure.
  • P0763 indicates SS3 function failure.
  • P0765 indicates SS4 solenoid circuit failure.
  • P0768 indicates SS4 function failure.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
  • Damaged shift solenoid.
  • Wiring concerns:
    • Open or short in vehicle harness.
    • Damaged harness or connector.
  • Internal transmission concerns:
    • Stuck valves.
    • Damaged friction material.
  • Damaged PCM.
HINT Shift solenoid description 
  • Two-way, normally open style.
  • Provide gear selection by controlling the pressure to the shift valves.
  • SS4 is also used to apply and release the coast clutch.
DTC P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0743, P0750, P0751, P0751, P0755, P0760, P0761, P0765 DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

DTC P0731, P0732, P0733, P0734, P0743, P0750, P0751, P0751, P0755, P0760, P0761, P0765 SHIFT SOLENOIDS SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) SOLENOID 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
  • Was PCM Quick Test Performed? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No Perform PCM Quick Test. See PCM QUICK TEST .
2 LOOSE CONNECTION TEST
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Access output state control (OSC) mode.
  • See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS .
  • Enter trans-bench mode.
  • Select PIDS to be monitored: SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 or TCC.
  • Select ON to turn suspect solenoid on.
  • Press SEND.
  • Wiggle all wiring and connectors to the transmission. Monitor the solenoid state for changes.
  • Select OFF to turn solenoid off.
  • Press SEND.
  • Does the suspect solenoid(s) fault state change? 
Yes Repair open or short in the vehicle harness or connector.
Go to step 9.
No Go to step 3.
3 SOLENOID FUNCTIONAL CHECK
  • Monitor each suspect solenoid state.
  • Turn each solenoid ON and OFF.
  • Does the solenoid turn ON and OFF when commanded and can solenoid activation be heard? 
Yes Go to step 4.
No Go to step 5.
4 OSC TRANS-DRIVE MODE (GR_CM OR TCC)
  • Perform OSC Trans-Drive Mode.
  • Select GR_CM for Shift Solenoid Failure and follow procedures for GR_CM as listed in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS .
  • Select TCC for Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Failure. Follow procedures of TCC in Drive Mode as listed in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS .
  • Does the transmission upshift and downshift or torque converter engage/disengage when commanded? 
Yes Clear all DTCs. Road test to verify if concern is still present If concern is still present, see SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION , to diagnose shift or torque converter concern.
No Go to step 5.
5 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Connect DVOM positive lead to VPWR solenoid terminal and negative lead to a good ground.
  • Is the battery voltage present? 
Yes Go to step 6.
No Check for open or short circuit in harness or solenoid.
Repair as necessary.
Go to step 9.
6 ELECTRICAL SIGNAL CHECK
  • Leave positive lead connected to VPWR solenoid terminal and connect negative lead to the signal terminal of the appropriate solenoid.
  • Perform trans-bench mode.
  • Select Parameter SSA/SS1, SSB/SS2, SSC/SS3, SSD/SS4 or TCC.
  • Select ON.
  • Press SEND.
  • Turn the solenoids ON and OFF, while monitoring the voltage reading on the DVOM, solenoid state on the IDS or equivalent tester (ON and OFF), listen for the solenoid to activate (click).
  • Select OFF, press SEND.
  • Does the voltage and solenoid state change? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Check for open or short circuit in harness, solenoid or a PCM concern.
Repair as necessary.
Go to step 9.
7 CHECK SOLENOID RESISTANCE AT SOLENOID
  • Disconnect the appropriate solenoid connector at the solenoid.
  • Check solenoid resistance by connecting an ohmmeter at the terminals of the solenoid.
  • Measure the resistance for suspect solenoid (SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4 or TCC).
  • Is the resistance for SS1-SS4 within 22-48 ohms or TCC within 8.9-16 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No Replace the solenoid.
See TRANSMISSION SOLENOID REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
Go to step 9.
8 CHECK SOLENOID FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Check for continuity between engine ground and appropriate shift solenoid terminal with ohmmeter.
  • Is there continuity? 
Yes Replace the solenoid.
See TRANSMISSION SOLENOID REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
No See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION , to diagnose shift or torque converter concerns.
Go to step 9.
9 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTCs COMPLETED
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  • Clear DTCs from PCM memory using IDS or equivalent tester generic OBD-II function.
  • Perform PCM Quick Test.
  • Is same DTC present? 
Yes Replace PCM and repeat PCM Quick Test.
No If any other DTC is present, go to applicable DTC inspection.
If no DTC is present, troubleshooting complete.
