Normal Operation

The safety belt warning indicator warns the driver that their safety belt is not fastened. The safety belt status is sent to the instrument cluster by the restraints control module (RCM) over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When the ignition switch is turned to the RUN or START position during the first 65 seconds, the instrument cluster turns on the safety belt warning indicator. If the safety belt remains unbuckled, once the Belt-Minder system is enabled, the instrument cluster flashes the indicator and turns on the Belt-Minder warning chime as a secondary alert to the driver.

DTC U0151 (Lost Communication With The Restraints Control Module [RCM]) - is a continuous DTC that sets in the instrument cluster if the instrument cluster does not receive the safety belt status, or loses communication with the RCM for more than 5 seconds and the instrument cluster turns the safety belt warning indicator off.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
  • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Is DTC U0151 retrieved? 
Yes See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index - Restraints Control Module (RCM) , .
No Go to next step.
2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND RCM SELF-TESTS
  • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the RCM continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are there any DTCs retrieved? 
Yes See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index - Restraints Control Module (RCM) , .
No Go to next step.
3 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMP AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster safety belt warning indicator (SBLTLAMP) active command. Command the safety belt warning lamp on then off again. Observe the safety belt warning indicator.
  • Does the safety belt warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 5.
4 CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the RCM connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the RCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new RCM. See Restraints Control Module (RCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for.
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
