Normal Operation

NOTE:
  • The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

The instrument cluster receives the driver door ajar status from the hardwired driver door switch. The instrument cluster receives all other door ajar status information from the SJB/GEM over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. When the driver door is open, the driver door switch closes to ground signaling the instrument cluster that the driver door is open. When any other door is open, the SJB/GEM sends a door ajar message to the instrument cluster to turn on the door ajar warning indicator. DTC U0140 (Lost Communication With the Body Control Module [GEM]) - is a continuous DTC that sets in the instrument cluster if the door ajar status message is missing for more than 5 seconds and the installment cluster illuminates the door ajar warning indicator.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST 17 THE DOOR AJAR WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE INTERIOR LAMPS FOR CORRECT OPERATION
  • Open and close each door while monitoring the interior lamps.
  • Do the interior lamps operate correctly? 
Yes Go to next step.
No See Interior Lighting to continue diagnosis on the interior lamps.
2 CHECK THE DRIVER DOOR INPUT TO THE CLUSTER
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster door ajar switch (D_DR_SW) PID. Monitor the driver door ajar switch PID while opening and closing the driver door.
  • Does the PID match the door position with the door open and closed? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 6.
3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
  • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Is DTC U0140 retrieved? 
Yes If DTC U0140 is retrieved, CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-tests. If DTC U0140 is retrieved again, go to next step. For all other DTCs, See Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index - B, C And U Codes .
No Go to step 5.
4 CHECK THE NETWORK OPERATION
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Network test
  • Does the SJB/GEM pass the network test? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No DIAGNOSE the module communication network. See Pinpoint Test 5: No Controller Area Network (CAN) Communication .
5 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMP AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster door ajar warning indicator (DRAJARLMP) active command. Command the door ajar warning indicator on then off again. Observe the door ajar indicator.
  • Does the door ajar warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No Go to step 9.
6 CHECK THE SJB/GEM FOR AN OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: SJB J-2280C.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper between the SJB/GEM J-2280c pin 2, circuit (V/O), harness side and ground.
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster door ajar switch (D_DR_SW) PID. Monitor the driver door ajar switch PID.
  • Does the PID indicate the door closed with the jumper wire disconnected and open with the jumper wire connected? 
Yes REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to step 8.
No REMOVE the jumper wire. Go to next step.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (V/O) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster connector 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 2, circuit (V/O), harness side and the SJB/GEM J-2280C pin 2, circuit (V/O) harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
8 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB/GEM OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the SJB/GEM connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the SJB/GEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new SJB/GEM. See Smart Junction Box (SJB) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See Instrument Cluster . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
