Symptom Troubleshooting Chart - Warning Devices

POSSIBLE CAUSE TROUBLESHOOTING CHART

Problem Possible Cause Action
No communication with the instrument cluster
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Instrument cluster
See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  to continue diagnosis of the instrument cluster.
The safety belt warning chime does not operate correctly
  • Instrument cluster
VERIFY the safety belt warning indicator operates correctly.
  • If the safety belt warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER
  • If the safety belt warning indicator does not operate correctly, See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  to continue diagnosis of the safety belt warning indicator.
The belt minder chime does not operate correctly
  • The belt minder is disabled
ENABLE the belt minder. See PROGRAMMABLE MODULE INSTALLATION to enable using a integrated diagnostic system (IDS) or equivalent tester. To enable without using a IDS or equivalent tester, See SAFETY BELT MINDER DEACTIVATING/ACTIVATING  .
  • Instrument cluster
VERIFY the safety belt warning indicator operates correctly.
  • If the safety belt warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
  • If the safety belt warning indicator does not operate correctly, See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  to continue diagnosis of the safety belt warning indicator.
The key-in-ignition warning chime is inoperative
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Key-in-ignition warning switch
  • Instrument cluster
See PINPOINT TEST 1: THE KEY-IN-IGNITION WARNING CHIME IS INOPERATIVE  .
The door ajar warning chime does not operate correctly
  • Instrument cluster
VERIFY the door ajar warning indicator operates correctly.
  • If the door ajar warning indicator operates correctly, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .
  • If the door ajar warning indicator does not operate correctly, See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  to continue diagnosis of the door ajar warning indicator.
The headlamp on warning chime does not operate correctly
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Instrument cluster
See PINPOINT TEST 2: THE HEADLAMP ON WARNING CHIME DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY  .
The parking brake on warning chime does not operate correctly
  • Instrument cluster
See PINPOINT TEST 3: THE PARKING BRAKE ON WARNING CHIME DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY  .
The air bag warning chime is inoperative
  • Instrument cluster
RETRIEVE the recorded diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from both the continuous and on-demand instrument cluster self-tests.
  • If DTC B1868 is retrieved, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
  • If no DTCs are retrieved, REFER to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  to diagnose the inoperative air bag warning indicator.
The chime sounds when the driver door is ajar (no key in ignition and headlamps off)
  • Key-in-ignition warning switch
  • Wiring, terminals or connectors
  • Instrument cluster
All the chimes are inoperative
  • Instrument cluster
DISCONNECT all the instrument cluster connectors. CHECK for corrosion and pushed-out pins. CONNECT all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly. OPERATE the system and VERIFY the concern is still present. If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
