Normal Operation

The instrument cluster receives the ABS status from the ABS module through hardwired circuitry. When an ABS concern is present, the ABS module sends the instrument cluster a command to illuminate the ABS warning indicator. If the instrument cluster detects a fault condition in the ABS, the instrument cluster turns on the ABS warning indicator.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

PINPOINT TEST 29 THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING INDICATOR IS ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
  • Check the recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-test.
  • Is DTC C1221 present? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Go to next step.
2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND ABS MODULE SELF-TESTS
  • Check the recorded ABS module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-test.
  • Are any DTCs present? 
Yes See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR
  • Key in ON position.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Is the brake warning indicator illuminated? 
Yes See PINPOINT TEST 16: THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER ON  to diagnose the brake warning indicator.
No Go to next step.
4 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
  • Enter the following information on the diagnostic scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster ABS warning indicator (ABS_LAMP) active command. Command the ABS warning indicator on and then off again. Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 9.
5 CHECK THE ABS WARNING INDICATOR OPERATION
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: ABS Module connector 0413-102.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the ABS module 0413-102 pin 17, circuit (L/O), harness side and ground.
  • Key in ON position.
  • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator turn off? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (L/O) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster connector 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 18, circuit (L/O), harness side and the ABS module 0413-102 pin 17, circuit (L/O), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (L/O) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster connector 0922-101.
  • Disconnect: ABS Module connector 0413-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 18, circuit (L/O), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
8 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the ABS module connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the ABS module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new ABS module. See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
