Normal Operation

The instrument cluster controls the passive anti-theft system (PATS) with the powertrain control module (PCM) and receives the anti-theft key status from the hardwired PATS transceiver. If there is a PATS concern, the instrument cluster anti-theft indicator either flashes rapidly or glows steadily (for more than 3 seconds) when the ignition switch is turned to the ON or START positions. The PATS also flashes the theft indicator every 2 seconds at ignition OFF to act as a visual theft deterrent.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests. Are there any DTCs retrieved?	Yes	If PATS-related DTCs were retrieved, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - ANTI THEFT - PATS . For all other instrument cluster DTCs, see INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX .
1		No	VERIFY the vehicle is equipped with PATS. Go to next step.
2	CONFIRM THE PATS FUNCTIONS CORRECTLY Check the PATS to verify the system functions correctly. Does the PATS function correctly?	Yes	Go to next step.
2		No	VERIFY the vehicle is equipped with PATS.
3	CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present?	Yes	INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
3		No	The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
