Normal Operation

The instrument cluster receives the supplemental restraint system (SRS) status from the restraints control module (RCM) over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The instrument cluster illuminates the air bag warning indicator upon receipt of a message from the RCM.

DTC U0151 (Lost Communication With The Restraints Control Module [RCM]) - is a continuous DTC that sets in the instrument cluster if a missing message from the RCM occurs and the instrument cluster defaults the air bag warning indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

RCM
Instrument cluster

AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR PINPOINT TEST 20

PINPOINT TEST 20		THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP	INSPECTION		ACTION
1	RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests. lsDTCU0151 retrieved?	Yes	If DTC U0151 is retrieved, CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-tests. If DTC U0140 is retrieved again, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) , .
1		No	Go to next step.
2	CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER RESTRAINTS OUTPUT CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL Key in ON position. Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Instrument Cluster DataLogger Select the instrument cluster air bag warning indicator (RESTRAINT) active command. Command the air bag warning indicator on then off again. Observe the air bag warning indicator. Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?	Yes	Go to next step.
2		No	Go to step 4.
3	CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM OPERATION Disconnect all the RCM connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect the all the RCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present?	Yes	INSTALL a new RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
3		No	The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
4	CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors. Check for: corrosion damaged pins pushed-out pins Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present. Is the concern still present?	Yes	INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
4		No	The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
