Normal Operation

The instrument cluster receives the supplemental restraint system (SRS) status from the restraints control module (RCM) over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The instrument cluster illuminates the air bag warning indicator upon receipt of a message from the RCM.

DTC U0151 (Lost Communication With The Restraints Control Module [RCM]) - is a continuous DTC that sets in the instrument cluster if a missing message from the RCM occurs and the instrument cluster defaults the air bag warning indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: 

AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR PINPOINT TEST 20

PINPOINT TEST 20 THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
  • Retrieve the recorded DTCs from the instrument cluster continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • lsDTCU0151 retrieved? 
Yes If DTC U0151 is retrieved, CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-tests. If DTC U0140 is retrieved again, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) , .
No Go to next step.
2 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER RESTRAINTS OUTPUT CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL
  • Key in ON position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool:
    • Instrument Cluster DataLogger
  • Select the instrument cluster air bag warning indicator (RESTRAINT) active command. Command the air bag warning indicator on then off again. Observe the air bag warning indicator.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 4.
3 CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the RCM connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect the all the RCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
