Normal Operation

NOTE:
  • The smart junction box (SJB) is also known as the generic electronic module (GEM).

With the ignition switch in the START or RUN position, the instrument cluster receives voltage from the SJB/GEM through circuits (Y/O) and (V/GY). With the ignition switch in the OFF position, the instrument cluster receives its keep-alive voltage from the SJB/GEM through circuit (R). The instrument cluster is grounded through circuits (B/W) and (B/Y).

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following: 

CAUTION:
  • Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PINPOINT TEST 1

PINPOINT TEST 1 THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IS INOPERATIVE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FOR VOLTAGE
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster connector 0922-101.
  • Key in ON position.
  • Using Chart 1 at the end of test, measure the voltage between the instrument cluster, harness side and ground.
  • Are the voltages greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to next step.
No VERIFY the SJB/GEM fuses 9 (5A), 10 (10A), and 33 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
2 CHECK CIRCUITS (B/Y) AND (B/W) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster connector 0922-102.
  • Using Chart 2 at the end of test, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster, harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes INSTALL a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . TEST the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
