Possible Causes

CAUTION:
  • Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
DTCS C1148, C1158, C1229, C1233, C1234 AND C1237 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR COHERENCY FAULT/SIGNAL INCORRECT - PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 4 DTCS C1148, C1158, C1229, C1233, C1234 AND C1237 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR COHERENCY FAULT/SIGNAL INCORRECT
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK ALL TIRE SIZES
NOTE:
  • If DTCs C1145, C1155 or C1230 are present, they must be fixed before C1148, C1158, C1229, C1233, C1234 and C1237. For any other DTCs go to the appropriate pinpoint test.
  • Make sure that all the tire sizes are correct and matching.
  • Are all the tires the correct size? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new tire of the correct size for each tire that is incorrect. Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
2 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR PIDs
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect: IDS or equivalent tester.
  • Key ON.
  • Using the IDS or equivalent tester, monitor the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module PIDs LF, RF and RR while driving the vehicle at a constant speed above 20 km/h (12.43 mph) for at least 10 seconds.
  • Are the wheel speed sensor PIDs consistent? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT(S) AT THE ABS MODULE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module connector.
    • For DTC C1148 and C1234,  while spinning the wheel, measure the voltage (A/C) between ABS module circuit (V/W), harness side and ABS module circuit (Y), harness side.
    • For DTC C1158 and C1233,  while spinning the wheel measure the voltage (A/C) between ABS module circuit (GY/V), harness side and ABS module circuit (V), harness side.
    • For DTC C1229 and C1237,  while spinning the wheel, measure the voltage (A/C) between ABS module circuit (W/BR), harness side and ABS module circuit (BR/G), harness side.
  • Is the wheel speed sensor output between 150 mvolts and 3500 mvolts? 
Yes Go to step 6.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect: Suspect wheel speed sensor connector(s).
    • For DTC C1148 and C1234,  measure the resistance between
    • ABS module circuit (V/W), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor circuit (V/W), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (Y), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor circuit (Y), harness side.
  • For DTC C1158 and C1233,  measure the resistance between:
    • ABS module circuit (GY/V), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor circuit (GY/V), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (V), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor circuit (V), harness side.
  • For DTC C1229 and C1237,  measure the resistance between:
    • ABS module circuit (W/BR), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor circuit (W/BR), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (BR/G), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor circuit (BR/G), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair the affected circuits) for an open. Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h '(6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
5 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR(S) RESISTANCE
  • For DTC C1148 and C1234,  measure the resistance between RF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1158 and C1233,  measure the resistance between LF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1229 and C1237, measure the resistance between rear wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • Is the resistance between 800 and 1400 ohms (front 2WD), 380 and 480 ohms (front 4WD) or 800 and 2500 ohms (rear all)? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4WD . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
For the front wheel speed sensor (2WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 2WD . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
For the rear wheel speed sensor, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
6 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT
  • For DTC C1148 and C1234,  while spinning the wheel, measure the voltage (A/C) between RF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1158 and C1233,  while spinning the wheel, measure the voltage (A/C) between LF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1229 and C1237,  while spinning the wheel, measure the voltage (A/C) between rear wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • Is the wheel speed sensor output between 150 mvolts and 3500 mvolts? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new wheel speed sensor ring. For the front wheel speed sensor ring (4WD), install a new front wheel hub. See WHEEL HUB . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
For the front wheel speed sensor ring (2WD), install a new front brake disc. See BRAKE DISC , . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
For the rear wheel speed sensor ring, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs and drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least 3 minutes.
7 CHECK ALL WHEEL SPEED SENSORS FOR DAMAGE AND LOOSENESS
NOTE:
  • Any time a wheel speed sensor is removed, thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces. On front wheel speed sensors, apply grease.
  • With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. See LIFTING .
    CAUTION:
    • Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire can lead to unnecessary installation of a new component.
  • Inspect the wheel speed sensor mounting for looseness. If the wheel speed sensor is suspected, inspect the sensor for corrosion on the rear axle housing boss or on the front wheel speed sensor mounting flange. Clean as necessary.
  • Is the wheel speed sensor OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No If the wheel speed sensor mounting is loose or corroded, remove the sensor, plug the opening and thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
If the wheel speed sensor is damaged, install a new sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4WD . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the front wheel speed sensor (2WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 2WD . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the rear sensor, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
8 CHECK ALL WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RINGS FOR DAMAGE
NOTE:
  • Any time a wheel speed sensor is removed, thoroughly clean the mounting surfaces. On front wheel speed sensors, apply grease.
  • Remove the wheel speed sensors.
    CAUTION:
    • Examine the wheel speed sensor wire carefully with good light. Failure to verify damage in the wheel speed sensor wire can lead to unnecessary installation of a new component
  • Inspect the wheel speed sensor ring for damaged or missing teeth. Rotate the wheel to verify that no teeth are missing.
  • Is the wheel speed sensor ring OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new wheel speed sensor ring. For the front wheel speed sensor ring (4WD), install a new front wheel hub. See WHEEL HUB . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the front wheel speed sensor ring (2WD), install a new front brake disc. See BRAKE DISC , . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the rear wheel speed sensor ring, rear drive axle/differential, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
9 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
  • Check for.
    • corrosion.
    • pushed-out pins.
    • spread terminals.
  • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs, DRIVE the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least one minute and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new ABS module. see ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Clear the DTCs. Drive the vehicle at least 10 km/h (6.25 mph) for at least one minute.
