Possible Causes

CAUTION:
  • Use the Flex Probe Kit for all test connections to prevent damage to the wiring terminals. Do not use standard multimeter probes.
DTCS C1145, C1155 AND C1230 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE - PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 3 DTCS C1145, C1155 AND C1230 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT FAILURE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module connector.
  • Disconnect: Suspect wheel speed sensor connector(s).
  • For DTC C1145,  measure the voltage between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (V/W), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (Y), harness side.
  • For DTC C1155,  measure the voltage between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (GY/V), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (V), harness side.
  • For DTC C1230,  measure the voltage between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (W/BR), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (BR/G), harness side.
  • Is voltage present? 
Yes Repair the affected circuits) for a short to voltage. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
No Go to next step.
2 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • For DTC C1145,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (V/W), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (Y), harness side.
  • For DTC C1155,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (GY/V), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (V), harness side.
  • For DTC C1230,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (W/BR), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (BR/G), harness side.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair the affected circuits) for a short to ground. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
3 CHECK THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT(S) FOR AN OPEN
  • For DTC C1145,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (V/W), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor circuit (V/W), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (Y), harness side and LF wheel speed sensor circuit (Y), harness side.
  • For DTC C1155,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (GY/V), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor circuit (GY/V), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (V), harness side and RF wheel speed sensor circuit (V), harness side.
  • For DTC C1230,  measure the resistance between ground and:
    • ABS module circuit (W/BR), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor circuit (W/BR), harness side.
    • ABS module circuit (BR/G), harness side and rear wheel speed sensor circuit (BR/G), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair the affected circuits) for an open. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
4 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR RESISTANCE
  • For DTC C1145,  measure the resistance between RF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1155,  measure the resistance between LF wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • For DTC C1230,  measure the resistance between rear wheel speed sensor circuits component side.
  • Is the resistance between 800 and 1400 ohms (front 2WD), 380 and 480 ohms (front 4WD) or 800 and 2500 ohms (rear all)? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Install a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4WD . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the front wheel speed sensor (2WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 2WD . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the rear wheel speed sensor, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Cear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
5 CHECK WHEEL SPEED SENSOR HARNESS FOR DAMAGE
  • Inspect the wheel speed sensor harness at the affected wheel end for chafing or other wiring damage.
  • Is damage found? 
Yes Install a new wheel speed sensor. For the front wheel speed sensor (4WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 4WD . Use IDS or equivalent tester to clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the front wheel speed sensor (2WD), see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - FRONT, 2WD . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied. For the rear wheel speed sensor, see WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - REAR . Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all ABS connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion.
    • pushed-out pins.
    • spread terminals.
    • Connect all ABS connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
    • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
    • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new ABS module. see ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. Repeat the self-test with the brake pedal not applied.
