Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, and 2003 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, go to next step.
  2. DTC P0452: Check For Fuel Saturation Of FTP Sensor -  Turn ignition off. Visually check for liquid fuel contamination of FTP sensor 3-pin harness connector. Check for a completely submerged FTP sensor in liquid fuel which can affect correct FTP voltage reading. If FTP sensor and its 3-pin harness connector show signs of fuel contamination, repair FTP sensor 3-pin harness connector as necessary. If FTP sensor is completely submerged in fuel, drain fuel tank and refill. After repair, go to step  7 . If FTP sensor and its 3-pin harness connector do not show signs of fuel contamination, go to next step.
  3. Verify FTP SIG Voltage -  With KOEO, access FTP V PID. If FTP V PID voltage reading is less than 0.22 volt, go to next step. If FTP V PID voltage reading is 0.22 volt or more, fault that produced DTC P0452 is intermittent. See INTERMITTENT  testing under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. NOTE: If a scan tool communication problem is present, remove fused jumper wire and go to step  5 .

  5. Induce Opposite FTP Signal -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect FTP sensor 3-pin harness connector. Connect fused jumper wire between VREF circuit (Brown/White wire) and FTP circuit (Red/Pink wire) at FTP sensor 3-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . With KOEO, access FTP V PID. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, replace faulty FTP sensor. After repair, go to step  7 . If voltage reading is not 4-6 volts, remove fused jumper wire and go to next step.
  6. Check VREF at FTP Sensor Vehicle Harness Connector -  Measure voltage between VREF circuit (Brown/White wire) and SIG RTN circuit (Gray/Red wire) at FTP sensor 3-pin harness connector. If voltage reading is 4-6 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is not 4-6 volts, VREF is out of range. See VEHICLE REFERENCE VOLTAGE  testing under SYSTEM TESTS.
  7. Check FTP Circuit For Shorts To SIG RTN & PWR GND -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure . Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 62 (FTP circuit) and 91 (SIG RTN circuit). Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 62 (FTP circuit) and 103 (PWR GND circuit). If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, FTP circuit (Red/Pink wire) is shorted to SIG RTN circuit (Gray/Red wire) or PWR GND in PCM. Replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short in harness between FTP circuit and SIG RTN circuit or PWR GND circuit. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed -  Reconnect all electrical connectors. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If same DTC is present, replace PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable procedure for other DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTC is present, trouble shooting is complete.
