Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, and 2003 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, the fault that set Continuous Memory DTC P0443 (without KOEO or KOER DTC P0443) may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENT  testing under SYSTEM TESTS. Replace PCM after determining fault is not intermittent. If KOEO or KOER DTC P0443 is also set, go to next step.
  2. Check For VPWR To EVAP Canister Purge Valve -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect EVAP CPV 2-pin harness connector. With KOEO, measure voltage between EVAP CPV harness connector VPWR circuit (Red wire) and battery ground. See Fig 1 . Record voltage. Turn ignition off. If voltage reading is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10.5 volts or less, repair open in VPWR circuit (Red wire) between fuel pump relay harness connector and EVAP CPV harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  7 .

  3. NOTE: EVAP CPV resistance must be measured with engine cooled down.
  4. Check EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Resistance -  Measure resistance of EVAP CPV. If resistance reading is 30-38 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is not 30-38 ohms, replace faulty EVAP CPV. After repair, go to step  7 .
  5. Check Resistance of EVAP CPV Circuit -  Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect Breakout Box (49-UN01-130) to PCM harness connector only. See Figure . Measure resistance of EVAP CPV circuit between breakout box terminal No. 56 and EVAP CPV harness connector (Light Green/Blue wire). If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Light Green/Blue wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 56 and EVAP CPV harness connector. After repair, go to step  7 .
  6. Check EVAP Canister Purge Valve Circuit For Short To PWR GND -  Disconnect scan tool. Measure resistance between breakout box terminals No. 56 (EVAP circuit) and 103 (PWR GND circuit). If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit between PCM 104-pin harness connector and EVAP CPV harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  7 .
  7. Check EVAP CPV Circuit For Short To VPWR -  With KOEO, measure voltage between breakout box terminals No. 56 (EVAP circuit) and 103 (PWR GND circuit). Record voltage. Turn ignition off. If voltage reading is more than 10.5 volts, repair short circuit between PCM 104-pin harness connector and EVAP CPV harness connector. After repair, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10.5 volts or less, replace faulty PCM. VPWR is shorted inside PCM. After repair, go to next step.
  8. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed -  Reconnect all electrical connectors. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If same DTC is present, replace PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable procedure for other DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTC is present, trouble shooting is complete.
