Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, and 2003 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed, go to next step.
  2. Check Injector Fault PIDs -  Using scan tool, access INJ1F through INJ6F PIDs. If an injector(s) fault is present, go to next step. If an injector fault is not present, go to step  6 .
  3. NOTE: Performing next test step erases Continuous Memory DTCs.

  4. Check Fuel Injector(s) & Harness Resistance -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect breakout box to PCM harness connector only. See Figure . Use injector fault PID to determine fuel injector circuit(s) requiring testing. Measure resistance of fuel injector between suspect INJ circuit terminal and VPWR terminal No. 71 of breakout box. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is 8.5-15.5 ohms (2.3L and 3.0L) or 11-18 ohms (4.0L), replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to step  6 . If resistance reading is not 8.5-15.5 ohms (2.3L and 3.0L) or 11-18 ohms (4.0L), go to next step.
  5. Check Fuel Injector Harness Resistance -  Disconnect suspect fuel injector 2-pin harness connector. Measure resistance of VPWR circuit (Red wire) between breakout box terminal No. 71 and suspect fuel injector harness connector. Record reading. Measure resistance of INJ circuit between appropriate breakout box terminal and suspect fuel injector harness connector. See Fig 1 . Record reading. See INJ CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. If any resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Red wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 71 and fuel injector harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  6 .
    INJ CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION

    Injector Breakout Box Terminal Wire Color
    Injector 1 No. 75 Tan
    Injector 2 No. 101 White
    Injector 3 No. 74 Brown/Yellow
    Injector 4 No. 100 Brown/Light Blue
    Injector 5 No. 73 Tan/Black
    Injector 6 No. 99 Light Green/Orange
  6. Check Fuel Injector Harness Circuit For Short To Power & Ground -  Measure resistance between suspect INJ circuit terminal and VPWR circuit terminal No. 71 of breakout box. See Fig 1 . For INJ circuit identification, see INJ CIRCUIT IDENTIFICATION  table. Record reading. Measure resistance between suspect INJ circuit terminal and PWR GND circuit terminal No. 103 of breakout box. Record reading. If each resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, replace faulty PCM. After repair, repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Go to next step. If each resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. After repair, go to next step.
  7. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed -  Make sure all electrical connectors are reconnected. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If the same DTC is present, replace faulty PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTCs are present, test is complete.
