Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda B4000, 2003 Mazda B3000, and 2003 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If QUICK TEST was not performed, go to QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If QUICK TEST was performed:
    • For KOER DTC P1101, go to next step.
    • For KOEO DTC P1101, go to step  4 .
    • For Continuous Memory DTC P1100, go to step  14 .
    • For DTC P0102, go to step  3 .
    • For DTC P0103, go to step  16 .
  2. DTC P1101: Check For MAF Sensor Continuous Memory DTCs -  Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Drive vehicle 6-10 minutes. Retrieve Continuous Memory DTCs. If a Continuous Memory DTC is not present with KOER DTC P1101, go to step  4 . If a Continuous Memory DTC is present with KOER DTC P1101, perform the following:
  3. DTC P0102: Check MAF/IAT Sensor Signal Low Input To PCM -  Inspect air intake system ducting for broken or loose clamps and cracks/holes or other damage to components. Repair as necessary. Start engine and idle. If KOER DTC P0505 is set, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . On A/T vehicles, if engine stalls and cannot maintain idle, go to step  8 . On all other applications, increase engine speed to 1500 RPM for 5 seconds, then bring back to idle. Access MAF V PID. If voltage reading is less than 0.23 volt, go to step  5 . If voltage reading is 0.23 volt or more, go to next step.
  4. DTC P1101: Check For MAF Sensor Signal Out Of Self-Test Range -  Turn ignition off. DTC P1101 may be generated by a low charged vehicle battery or a garage exhaust ventilation system. Repair vehicle battery as necessary. Remove garage exhaust ventilation system and vent vehicle exhaust to outside. Rerun KOEO self-test. Verify MAF/IAT sensor is connected. Turn ignition on. With KOER, access MAF V PID. If voltage reading is 0.46-2.44 volts, fault is not present at this time. See INTERMITTENT  testing under SYSTEM TESTS. If voltage reading is not 0.46-2.44 volts, go to next step.
  5. Check VPWR Voltage to MAF Sensor -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. With KOEO, check voltage between VPWR circuit (Red wire) at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector and negative battery terminal. See Fig 1 . If voltage reading is more than 10.5 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10.5 volts or less, repair open circuit. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  19 .

  6. Check Power Ground Circuit Between MAF/IAT Sensor & Power Relay -  Measure voltage between PWR GND circuit (Black wire) at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector and positive battery terminal. If voltage reading is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage reading is 10 volts or less, repair open circuit in Black wire between MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector and PCM 104-pin harness connector. After repair, go to step  19 .
  7. Check VPWR Circuit For Open In Harness -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect breakout box to PCM harness connector only. See Fig 2 . Measure resistance of VPWR circuit (Red wire) between breakout box terminal No. 71 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 71 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. After repair, go to step  19 .

  8. Check MAF Circuit Short To PWR GND Or MAF RTN In Harness -  Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Measure resistance between MAF circuit (Light Blue/Red wire) and PWR GND circuit (Black wire) at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . Record reading. Measure resistance between MAF circuit (Light Blue/Red wire) and MAF RTN circuit (Tan/Light Blue wire) at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. Record reading. If either resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If either resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short in appropriate circuit. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  19 .
  9. Check MAF RTN Circuit Short To PWR GND In Harness -  Measure resistance between MAF RTN circuit (Tan/Light Blue wire) and PWR GND circuit (Black wire) at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. After repair, go to step  19 .
  10. Check MAF Circuit Voltage Cycling Integrity -  Reconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect scan tool to DLC. With KOEO, access MAF V PID and record reading. Connect fused jumper between MAF RTN and PWR GND at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . Observe MAF V PID. If voltage reading changed from less than 0.23 volt (closer to zero volts) to more than 4.5 volts, replace faulty MAF/IAT sensor. After repair, go to step  19 . If voltage reading did not change as specified, for DTC P0102, go to next step. For DTC P1101 without P0102 set, go to step  12 .
  11. Check MAF Circuit For Open In Harness -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect breakout box to PCM harness connector only. See Fig 2 . Measure resistance of MAF circuit (Light Blue/Red wire) between breakout box terminal No. 88 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Light Blue/Red wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 88 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  19 .
  12. Check PWR GND Circuit For Open In Harness -  Turn ignition off. Disconnect scan tool from DLC. Measure resistance of PWR GND circuit (Black wire) between MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector and negative battery terminal. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance reading is 10 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Black wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. After repair, go to step  19 .
  13. Check MAF RTN For Open In Harness -  Measure resistance of MAF RTN circuit (Tan/Light Blue wire) between breakout box terminal No. 36 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . If resistance reading is less than 5 ohms, replace faulty PCM. After repair, go to step  19 . If resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit in Tan/Light Blue wire between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminal No. 36 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. After repair, go to step  19 .
  14. DTC P1100: Check MAF Circuit For Intermittent Voltage To PCM -  Start engine. If stable idle is not at least 700 RPM, go to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If idle is okay, run engine up to 1500 RPM for 5 seconds, then return to idle. Access MAF V PID and observe while lightly tapping on MAF/IAT sensor and wiggling wiring harness to simulate road shock. If voltage reading goes to less than 0.23 volt (minimum) or more than 4.6 volts (maximum), inspect MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. If sensor harness connector is okay, replace faulty MAF/IAT sensor. After repair, go to step  19 . If voltage reading does not exceed minimum or maximum specifications, go to next step.
  15. Check For MAF Sensor Circuit For Intermittent Opens Or Shorts -  Access MAF V PID and observe. With KOEO, grasp MAF/IAT sensor harness and MAF/IAT 6-pin harness connector. Shake and bend harness back to dash panel. Shake and bend harness from dash panel to PCM. If voltage reading goes to less than 0.23 volt (minimum) or more than 4.6 volts (maximum), repair harness as necessary. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to step  19 . If voltage reading does not exceed minimum or maximum specifications, fault is not present at this time. See INTERMITTENT  testing under SYSTEM TESTS.
  16. DTC P0103: Check MAF Sensor Signal High Input To PCM -  This DTC may be caused by an airflow restriction at MAF/IAT sensor screen. Before continuing with procedure, inspect MAF/IAT sensor screen and clean if necessary. If screen was blocked with material, recheck for DTCs after cleaning screen. If screen is okay, start engine and idle. If KOER DTC P0505 is set, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If KOER DTC P0505 is not set, increase engine speed to 1500 RPM for 5 seconds, then return to idle. MAF V PID should be more than 4.6 volts. Access MAF V PID and record voltage. Turn ignition off. Disconnect MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. Connect fused jumper wire between PWR GND (Black wire) and MAF RTN (Tan/Light Blue wire) circuits at MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. See Fig 1 . Observe voltage reading with KOER. If voltage reading is less than previous voltage reading of 0.23 volt, turn ignition off. Remove fused jumper wire. Replace faulty MAF/IAT sensor. After repair, go to step  19 . If voltage reading is not less than previous voltage reading of 0.23 volt, turn ignition off. Remove fused jumper wire. Go to next step.
  17. Check MAF Circuit For Short To VPWR In Harness -  Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Connect breakout box to PCM harness connector only. See Fig 2 . With KOEO, measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 88 (MAF circuit) and terminals No. 51, 77 and 103 (PWR GND circuit). See Fig 1 . If voltage reading is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage reading is one volt or more, repair short circuit between PCM 104-pin harness connector terminals No. 51, 77, 88 and 103 and MAF/IAT sensor 6-pin harness connector. After repair, go to step  19 .
  18. Check MAF Circuit For Short To VREF In Harness -  Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 88 (MAF circuit) and terminal No. 90 (VREF circuit). If resistance reading is more than 10,000 ohms, if an idle concern is not present, replace faulty PCM.If an idle concern is still present, disregard DTC P0103 at this time. Go to SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If resistance reading is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS. After repair, go to next step.
  19. Verify Trouble Shooting Of DTCs Completed -  Make sure all electrical connectors are reconnected. Clear DTCs from PCM memory using scan tool. Perform QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If the same DTC is present, replace faulty PCM. Repeat QUICK TEST  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no DTCs are present, test is complete.
