Disassembly Note

- Disconnect the spark plug wires.
- Disconnect the vacuum line.
- Disconnect the engine harness from:
- The ignition coil.
- The radio ignition interference capacitor.
- The EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
- The vacuum line from the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid.
- Remove the nuts.
- Remove the bolts and the generator mounting bracket.
- Remove the bolt and nut.
- Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
- Remove the bolts and the water pump pulley.
- Remove the bolts and the crankshaft pulley.
- Remove the crankshaft damper bolt.
- Using Crankshaft Damper Remover SST 303-009 (T58P-6316-D) or equivalent, remove the crankshaft damper.
- Disconnect the engine harness from:
- The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.
- The Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
- The DPFE sensor.
- Remove the six bolts and upper intake manifold.
- Remove the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve.
- Remove the intake manifold upper gasket.
- Disconnect the engine harness from:
- The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor.
- The water temperature indicator sender unit.
- The fuel injectors.
- The camshaft synchronizer.
- Remove the valve covers.
- If required, remove the valve cover gaskets.
- Clean the sealing surfaces.
- Remove the rocker arms and the push rods.
- Remove the eight bolts and lower intake manifold.
- Remove the intake manifold gaskets and end seals.
- Clean the surface.
- Remove the camshaft synchronizer. Refer to CAMSHAFT .
- Remove the bolts and oil pan.
- Remove the oil pan gasket.
- Clean the surfaces.
- Remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
- Remove the front cover bolts and engine front cover.
- Remove the engine front cover gasket.
- Clean the sealing surfaces.
- Remove the EGR valve to exhaust manifold tube.
- Remove the oil level indicator tube.
- Remove the oil filter.
- Remove the bolts.
- Remove the cylinder heads.
- Remove the cylinder head gaskets.
- Remove the valve tappet guide plate retainer.
- Remove the valve tappet guide plates.
- The valve tappets are positional. Identify each valve tappet for installation in the original position.
- Remove the valve tappets.
- Align the timing marks.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the timing sprockets and timing chain as an assembly.
- Remove the camshaft retainer.
- Remove the camshaft.
- If required, remove the camshaft bearings.
- Use the Camshaft Bearing Set SST 303-017 (T65L-6250-A) or equivalent.
- Remove the oil pump.
- Before removing the piston and connecting rod assemblies, inspect the top of the cylinder bores. If required, remove the cylinder ridge.
- Remove the piston and connecting rod assemblies one at a time.
- Remove the connecting rod nuts in pairs.
- Remove the connecting rod cap.
- Remove the piston and connecting rod assembly.
- Remove the bolts and main bearing caps.
- Remove the lower crankshaft main bearings.
- Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
- Remove the crankshaft.
- Remove the upper crankshaft main bearings.
