Ignition Coil Resistance (Miata, Protege & Protege5)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Tribute, 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, and 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Using an ohmmeter, measure secondary resistance between coil towers No. 1 and 4 and between coil towers No. 2 and 3. See Fig 2 . Resistance should be as specified. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE  table. If resistance is not as specified, replace appropriate coil.

IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE (1)

Application Primary - Ohms Secondary - Ohms
Miata (2) 7,000-11,000
Millenia
2.3L (3) (3)
2.5L .49-.73 (4) 20,000-31,000
MPV 10.0 5,600
Protege & Protege5 (2) 7,000-11,000
626 .45-.55 11,500-15,500
(1) Measure resistance at 68°F (20°C).
(2) Information is not available from manufacturer.
(3) Refer to IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE (MILLENIA 2.3L)  .
(4) Remove distributor cap to measure secondary coil resistance.
