Possible Causes

A belt tension sensor circuit fault can be caused by:

NOTE:
  • To identify between a production OCS system and an OCS system service kit (OCS service kit), inspect the OCS module electrical connector.

A production OCS system allows the disconnect of the electrical connector from the OCS module.

An OCS system service kit has the OCS module electrical connector glued to the module. It cannot and should not be disconnected or altered.

NOTE:
  • Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough Inspection and Verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.
DTC B2909 - BELT TENSION SENSOR FAULT - PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 16 DTC B2909 - BELT TENSION SENSOR FAULT
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK FOR CONTINUOUS OR ON-DEMAND SELF TEST DTCs
WARNING:
  • Restraint system diagnostic tools are for service only. Tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road. Failure to remove restraint system diagnostic tools could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
WARNING:
  • Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
NOTE:
  • After diagnosing or repairing an SRS, the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road. 
NOTE:
  • The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: OCS Module On-Demand Self-Test / Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: View and Record OCS DTC B2909 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2909 retrieved from the OCS module? 
Yes This is a hard fault. The fault condition is still present. This fault cannot be cleared until it is corrected and the DTC is no longer retrieved during the on-demand self-test.
Using the fault PIDs recorded, GO to the appropriate pinpoint test step.
Vehicles with a production OCS system 
For belt tension sensor with a circuit fault, Go to next step.
For belt tension sensor with a short to battery fault, Go to step 8.
For belt tension sensor with a open fault, Go to step 9.
For belt tension sensor with a short to ground fault, Go to step 10.
Vehicles with a service OCS system  Go to step 11.
No This is an intermittent fault when present as a continuous memory DTC only (DTC not retrieved on demand). The fault condition is not present at this time. Go to step 20.
2 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Disconnect: OCS Module connector 0810-107
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between OCS module connector 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground; connector 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side and ground; connector 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground.
  • Are the voltages less than 0.2 volt? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (Y/L), circuit (L/BR) or circuit (G). Go to step 21.
3 CHECK BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Measure the resistance between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and the belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side; between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side and the belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2, circuit (G), harness side; and between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR), harness side and belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 0.5 ohm? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (Y/L), circuit (L/BR) or circuit (G). Go to step 21.
4 CHECK CIRCUITS (Y/L), (L/BR) and (G) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between OCS module connector 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground; and between OCS module connector 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR) harness side and ground; and between OCS module connector 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,0000 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (Y/L), circuit (L/BR) or circuit (G). Go to step 21.
5 CHECK CIRCUITS (Y/L), (L/BR) AND (G) FOR A SHORT
  • Measure the resistance between OCS module connector:
  • 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR), harness side.
  • 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side.
  • 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR), harness side and 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,0000 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (Y/L), circuit (G) or circuit (L/BR). Go to step 17.
6 CHECK OCS MODULE OUTPUT
  • Connect: OCS Module connector 0810-107
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side.
  • Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 
Yes Go to next step.
No INSTALL a new OCS system service kit. See OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR , . Go to step 21.
7 CHECK BELT TENSION SENSOR VOLTAGE OUTPUT
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Connect a fused jumper lead between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and pin 1, circuit (Y/L), component side.
  • Connect a fused jumper lead between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and pin 2, circuit (G), component side.
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), component side and ground as you vary the tension of the belt tension sensor.
  • Does the voltage vary from approximately 0.95 volt with no tension applied to the sensor to approximately 3.8 volts with full tension applied to the sensor? 
Yes Go to step 19.
No
NOTE:
  • The safety belt tension sensor (BTS) is part of the passenger front belt and retractor assembly.
INSTALL a new safety belt retractor. See SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR - FRONT 2-DOOR, REGULAR CAB , or SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR - FRONT 4-DOOR, CAB PLUS . Go to step 21.
8 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Repower the system. Do not  prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin /I (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the voltages less than 0.2 volt for 0810-110 pin 2 and 0810-110 pin 3 and approximately 5 volts for 0810-110 pin 1? 
Yes Go to step 19.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
9 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Disconnect: OCS Module connector 0810-107
  • Measure the resistance between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 11, circuit (Y/L), harness side and the belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side; between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 13, circuit (G), harness side and the belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2, circuit (G), harness side; and between OCS connector 0810-107 pin 12, circuit (L/BR), harness side and belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
10 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Measure the resistance between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground, and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground, and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms for 0810-110 pin 1 / 0810-111 pin 1 and 0810-110 pin 3 / 0810-111 pin 3 and less than 5 ohms for 0810-110 pin 2/0810-111 pin 2? 
Yes Go to step 19.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
11 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Carry out a thorough visual inspection of the OCS system wiring, terminals and connectors, the belt tension sensor wiring, terminals and connectors and the related seat wiring harness and body wiring harness terminals and connectors.
  • Were any problems noted? 
Yes REPAIR the seat connectors and wiring as needed. Go to step 21.
No Using the fault PIDs recorded in Step 1, GO to the appropriate pinpoint test step.
For belt tension sensor with a circuit fault, Go to next step.
For belt tension sensor with a short to battery fault, Go to step 15.
For belt tension sensor with a short to ground fault, Go to step 16.
12 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Disconnect:
  • Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Repower the system. Do not prove  out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING ,
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-111 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the voltages less than 0.2 volt for 0810-110 pin 2 / 0810-111 pin 2 and 0810-110 pin 3 / 0810-111 pin 3 and approximately 5 volts for 0810-110 pin 1/0810-111 pin 1? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
13 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Measure the resistance between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground, and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground, and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms for 0810-110 pin 1 / 0810-111 pin 1 and 0810-110 pin 3/ 0810-111 pin 3 and less than 5 ohms for 0810-110 pin 2/0810-111 pin 2? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
14 CHECK CIRCUITS (Y/L), (L/BR) AND (G) FOR A SHORT
  • Measure the resistance between belt tension sensor connector:
  • 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side. 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side.
  • 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No REPAIR circuit (Y/L), circuit (G) or circuit (L/BR). Go to step 21.
15 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-111 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the voltages less than 0.2 volt for 0810-110 pin 2 / 0810-111 pin 2 and 0810-110 pin 3 / 0810-111 pin 3 and approximately 5 volts for 0810-110 pin 1/0810-111 pin 1? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
16 CHECK THE BELT TENSION SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Disconnect: Belt Tension Sensor 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door)
  • Measure the resistance between belt tension sensor connector 0810-111 pin 3 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and ground; and between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or connector 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms for 0810-110 pin 1 and 0810-110 pin 3 and less than 5 ohms for 0810-110 pin 2? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No REPAIR circuit (L/BR), circuit (G) or circuit (Y/L). Go to step 21.
17 CHECK OCS MODULE OUTPUT
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor connector 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and connector 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side.
  • Is the voltage approximately 5 volts? 
Yes Go to next step.
No INSTALL a new OCS system service kit. See OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR , . Go to step 21.
18 CHECK BELT TENSION SENSOR VOLTAGE OUTPUT
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Connect a fused jumper lead between belt tension sensor 0810-110 pin 1 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 1 (4 door), circuit (Y/L), harness side and pin 1, circuit (Y/L), component side.
  • Connect a fused jumper lead between belt tension sensor 0810-110 pin 2 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 2 (4 door), circuit (G), harness side and pin 2, circuit (G), component side.
  • Repower the system. Do not  prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING ,
  • Key in ON position.
  • Measure the voltage between belt tension sensor 0810-110 pin 3 (2 door) or 0810-111 pin 3 (4 door), circuit (L/BR), component side and ground as you vary the tension of the belt tension sensor.
  • Does the voltage vary from approximately 0.95 volt with no tension applied to the sensor to approximately 3.8 volts with full tension applied to the sensor? 
Yes Go to next step.
NO
NOTE:
  • The safety belt tension sensor (BTS) is part of the passenger front belt and retractor assembly.
INSTALL a new safety belt retractor. See SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR - FRONT 2-DOOR, REGULAR CAB , or SAFETY BELT RETRACTOR - FRONT 4-DOOR, CAB PLUS . Go to step 21.
19 CONFIRM THE BELT TENSION SENSOR FAULT
NOTE:
  • Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tools, sensor electrical connectors and the RCM electrical connector are connected before carrying out the on-demand self-test. If not, erroneous DTCs will be recorded.
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Connect: OCS Module connector 0810-107 (if disconnected previously).
  • Connect: Belt Tension Sensor connector 0810-110 (2 Door) 0810-111 (4 Door).
  • Repower the system. Do not  prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING ,
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: OCS On-Demand Self-Test/Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: View and Record OCS DTC B2909 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2909 retrieved from the OCS module? 
Yes INSTALL a new OCS system service kit. See OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION SENSOR , . Go to step 21.
No CHECK for causes of the intermittent fault. ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. ACTIVATE other systems in the same wire harness. REPAIR any intermittent concerns found. Go to step 21.
20 CHECK FOR AN INTERMITTENT FAULT
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: OCS On-Demand Self-Test/Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: View and Record OCS DTC B2909 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2909 retrieved from the OCS module? 
Yes This is a hard fault. The fault condition is now present. This fault cannot be cleared until it is corrected and the DTC is no longer retrieved during the on-demand self-test.
Using the fault PIDs recorded, GO to the appropriate pinpoint test step.
Vehicles with a production OCS system 
For belt tension sensor with a circuit fault, Go to step 2.
For belt tension sensor with a short to battery fault, Go to step 8.
For belt tension sensor with a open fault, Go to step 9.
For belt tension sensor with a short to ground fault, Go to step 10.
Vehicles with a service OCS system Go to step 11  .
No CHECK for causes of the intermittent fault. ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. ACTIVATE other systems in the same wire harness. REPAIR any intermittent concerns found. Go to next step.
21 CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL DTCs Refer to the continuous memory DTCs recorded during Step 1.
Were any continuous memory DTCs retrieved during Step 1? 
Yes Do not clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) , for pinpoint test direction.
No RECONNECT the system. If previously directed to deactivate the system, REACTIVATE the system. See SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION , . REPOWER the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , . PROVE OUT the system. CLEAR all RCM and OCS module DTCs.
