Possible Causes

A cross link fault between the circuits of deployable devices can be caused by:

NOTE:
  • Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough Inspection and Verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test.

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK FOR CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND DTCs
WARNING:
  • Restraint system diagnostic tools are for service only. Tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road. Failure to remove restraint system diagnostic tools could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
WARNING:
  • Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • The safety belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a safety belt buckle pretensioner or safety belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.
WARNING:
  • Never probe the electrical connector on a safety canopy module. Doing so can result in safety canopy deployment.
NOTE:
  • The SRS must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: On-Demand Self-Test/Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester:

View and Record DTC B2792 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2792 retrieved? 
Yes This is a hard fault. The fault condition is still present. This fault cannot be cleared until it is corrected and the DTC is no longer retrieved during the on-demand self-test. Go to next step.
No This is an intermittent fault when present as a continuous memory DTC only (DTC not retrieved on demand). The fault condition is not present at this time. Go to step 4.
2 CHECK DEPLOYABLE CIRCUITS FOR A CROSS LINK FAULT
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Disconnect: RCM connectors 0810-101 b and 0810-101 a
  • Disconnect ALL of the affected deployable devices as indicated by the fault PIDs in Step 01.
  • Measure the resistance between the circuits of the affected deployable devices. See chart below.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms between the affected circuits? 
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the affected circuits. Go to step 5.
3 CONFIRM THE RCM FAULT
NOTE:
  • Make sure all restraint system diagnostic tools, sensor electrical connectors and the RCM electrical connectors are connected before carrying out the on-demand self-test. If not, erroneous DTCs will be recorded.
  • Connect: Restraint System Diagnostic Tools 418-F395 (2 required) to Driver Air Bag Module Electrical Connectors (If previously disconnected).
  • Connect: Restraint System Diagnostic Tools 418-F403 to Passenger Air Bag Module 0810-104 (If previously disconnected).
  • Connect: RCM connectors 0810-101 b and 0810-101a.
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: On-Demand Self-Test/Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: View and Record DTC B2792 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2792 retrieved? 
Yes INSTALL a new RCM. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) , . Go to step 5.
No CHECK for causes of the intermittent fault. ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. REPAIR any intermittent concerns found. Go to step 5.
4 CHECK FOR AN INTERMITTENT FAULT
  • Key in OFF position.
  • Depower the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • If a cross link fault for driver air bag squib 1 or squib 2 is present continuous:
  • remove the driver air bag module. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE , .
  • connect Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F395 (2 required) to driver air bag module electrical connectors.
  • If a cross link fault for passenger air bag module squib 1 or squib 2 is present continuous:
  • disconnect the passenger air bag module connector 0810-104.
  • connect Restraint System Diagnostic Tool 418-F403 to passenger air bag module connector 0810-104.
  • If a cross link fault for driver safety belt buckle pretensioner is present continuous:
  • disconnect the driver seat harness C-328.
  • If a cross link fault for passenger safety belt buckle pretensioner is present continuous:
  • disconnect the passenger seat harness C-339.
  • Repower the system. Do not prove out the system at this time. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , .
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: On-Demand Self-Test/Retrieve and Record Continuous Memory DTCs
NOTE:
  • With the driver seat harness disconnected, open circuit faults will be retrieved for the seat track position sensor, safety belt buckle switch and safety belt buckle pretensioner.

With the passenger seat harness disconnected, open circuit faults will be retrieved for the safety belt buckle switch, safety belt buckle pretensioner and a no communication fault with the OCS module.

  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on IDS or equivalent tester: View and Record DTC B2792 Fault PIDs
  • Was on-demand DTC B2792 retrieved? 
Yes This is a hard fault. The fault condition is now present. This fault cannot be cleared until it is corrected and the DTC is no longer retrieved during the on-demand self-test. Go to step 2.
No CHECK for causes of the intermittent fault. ATTEMPT to recreate the hard fault by flexing the wire harness and cycling the ignition key frequently. REPAIR any intermittent concerns found. Go to next step.
5 CHECK FOR ADDITIONAL DTCs
  • Refer to the continuous memory DTCs recorded during Step 1.
  • Were any continuous memory DTCs retrieved during Step 1? 
Yes Do not clear any DTCs until all DTCs have been resolved. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE (RCM) , for pinpoint test direction.
No RECONNECT the system. If previously directed to deactivate the system, REACTIVATE the system. See SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION AND REACTIVATION , . REPOWER the system. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING , . PROVE OUT the system. CLEAR all RCM and OCS module DTCs.
