CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER ON - PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 7 CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION Yes If the charging system warning indicator in inoperative, go to next step.
If the charging system warning indicator is always on, go to step 4.
No See CHARGING SYSTEM INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION to diagnose the system.
2 CHECK CIRCUIT (G) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Generator 0117-03.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • Key ON engine OFF (KOEO)
  • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster 0922-103 pin 20, circuit (G), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present?
Yes Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to next step
3 CHECK CIRCUIT (G) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, circuit (G), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes Go to step 6.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
4 CHECK THE GENERATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
  • Key OFF
  • Disconnect: Generator 0117-01 (2.3L engine) or 0117-04 (3.0L and 4.0L engines).
  • For 2.3L engines, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the generator 0117-01, circuit (G), harness side and ground.
  • For 3.0L and 4.0L engines, connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the generator 0117-04, circuit (G), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Observe the charging system warning indicator.
  • Does the charging system warning indicator turn off?
Yes Install a new generator. See GENERATOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 2.3L , GENERATOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 3.0L or GENERATOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION -- 4.0L . Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to next step.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (G) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • For 2.3L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, circuit (G), harness side and the generator 0117-01, circuit (G), harness side.
  • For 3.0L and 4.0L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, circuit (G), harness side and the generator 0117-04, circuit (G), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • damaged pins
    • pushed-out pins
    • incorrectly installed bulb sockets
    • burnt-out bulbs
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. see INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
