Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor 5R44E And 5R55E Only

NOTE:
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART

DTC P0712, P0713, P1711.P1713, P1718, P1783 TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT) SENSOR 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY
DETECTION CONDITION
  • P0712 indicates voltage drop across TFT sensor exceeds scale set for temperature of 157°C (315°F).
  • P0713 indicates voltage drop across TFT sensor exceeds scale set for temperature of -40°C (-40°F).
  • P1711 indicates TFT out of on-board diagnostic range.
  • P1713 indicates PCM has detected no TFT change at low range during operation.
  • P1718 indicates PCM has detected no TFT change at high range during operation.
  • P1783 indicates transmission overtemp condition.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
  • TFT sensor circuit grounded (P0712).
  • TFT sensor circuit open (P0713).
  • Transmission not at operating temperature during on-board diagnostic (P1711).
  • No change in TFT low range (P1713).
  • No change in TFT high range (P1718).
  • Transmission fluid temperature exceeded 127°C (260°F) (P1783).
  • Damaged PCM.
HINT TFT sensor description
  • Thermistor-type sensor that varies a reference voltage (resistance in TFT sensor varies with temperature).
  • PCM monitors the voltage signal across the TFT sensor and uses this information to determine the transmission fluid temperature, shift scheduling, torque converter clutch operation, and electronic pressure control (EPC).

DTC P0712, P0713, P1711, P1713, P1718, P1783 TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE (TFT) SENSOR 5R44E AND 5R55E ONLY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 Was PCM Quick Test performed? Yes Go to step 2.
No Perform PCM Quick Test. See PCM QUICK TEST , .
2 WARM-UP/COOL-DOWN CYCLE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Access the TFT V PID with the WDS or equivalent tester.
  • While monitoring the TFT V PID, perform the following test: If transmission is cold, run transmission to warm it up. If transmission is warm, allow transmission to cool down.
  • Does the TFT V PID increase as the transmission is warmed up or decrease as the transmission is cooled or does it drop in and out of range?
Yes If the TFT V PID increases as the transmission is warmed, or decreases as the transmission is cooled, clear all DTCs. Road test to verify if concern is still present. If concern is still present, See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION , to diagnose transmission overheating.
If the TFT V drops in and out of range, inspect for intermittent concern in the internal/external harness, sensor or connector.
No Go to step 3.
3 ELECTRICAL SIGNAL CHECK Yes Go to step 4.
No Check for open or short circuit in vehicle harness, internal harness or a PCM concern. Repair as necessary.
Go to step 5.
4 CHECK F1ESISTANCE OF TFT SENSOR
  • Disconnect transmission harness connector.
  • Connect DVOM across +TFT and -TFT terminals at transmission connector and record the resistance.
  • Resistance should be approximately in the ranges shown in the resistance table.
  • Is the resistance in the range?
Yes See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION , to diagnose an overheating concern.
No Replace control valve body wire harness (sensor is part of harness).
See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS , .
Go to step 5.
5 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTCs COMPLETED
  • Make sure to reconnect all disconnected connectors.
  • Clear DTCs from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent tester generic OBD-II function.
  • Perform PCM Quick Test.
  • Is same DTC present?
Yes Replace PCM and repeat PCM Quick Test.
No If any other DTC is present, go to applicable DTC inspection.
If no DTC is present, troubleshooting complete.
