PINPOINT TEST 1: EXCESSIVE FUEL ODOR

PINPOINT TEST 1 EXCESSIVE FUEL ODOR
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 TEST THE EVAP RUNNING LOSS SYSTEM MONITOR
  • Perform EVAP Running Loss System Repair Verification Drive Cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES .
  • Are PCM DTCs retrieved? 
Yes For DTC P0442, P0455, P1443 or P1450, see appropriate DTC Troubleshooting.
No Go to next step.
2 TEST FOR RESTRICTIONS IN THE EVAP SYSTEM FROM THE EVAP TEST PORT THROUGH THE CANISTER VENT SOLENOID
  • Connect the EVAP System Leak Tester to the EVAP test port.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Close the canister vent (CV) solenoid by accessing Output Test Mode.
  • Attempt to pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48kPa (14 in-H2O).
  • Press STOP (#4) on the WDS or equivalent tester to open the CV solenoid.
  • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
Yes Perform the EVAP System Leak Test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, perform EVAP Running Loss System Repair Verification Drive Cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES 01-01 DRIVE CYCLES . Go to next step.
No Go to PINPOINT TEST 2: HISS WHEN OPENING FUEL CAP .
3 TEST FOR A RESTRICTED TUBE BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK AND THE EVAP CANISTER
  • Connect the EVAP System Leak Tester to the fuel filler pipe.
  • Attempt to pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 in-H2O).
  • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
Yes Perform the EVAP System Leak Test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, perform EVAP Running Loss System Repair Verification Drive Cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES 01-01 DRIVE CYCLES .
No Go to next step.
4 TEST FOR EVAP CANISTER TUBE OR FUEL VAPOR VENT VALVE ASSEMBLY BLOCKAGE
  • Disconnect the fuel vent valve assembly from the EVAP canister tube.
  • Connect the EVAP System Leak Tester to the fuel filler pipe.
  • Attempt to pressurize the EVAP system to 3.48 kPa (14 in-H2O).
  • Does the pressure drop immediately? 
Yes Install a new EVAP canister tube and/or fuel vapor tube(s) between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister and bracket assembly. Perform the EVAP System Leak Test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, perform EVAP Running Loss System Repair Verification Drive Cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES .
No Install new fuel vapor vent valve(s) or assembly. Perform the EVAP System Leak Test. See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION SYSTEM LEAK TEST . If the system passes the leak test, perform EVAP Running Loss System Repair Verification Drive Cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES .
