Integrated Ignition Coil 1, 2, 3, Or 4 Failure

DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354 DETECTION CONDITION & POSSIBLE CAUSES

DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354 INTEGRATED IGNITION COIL 1, 2, 3, OR 4 FAILURE
DETECTION CONDITION 
  • P0351 through P0354 indicate that the powertrain control module (PCM) did not receive a valid ignition diagnostic monitor (IDM) pulse signal, which indicates that the primary side of the coil has failed from the ignition module (integrated in the PCM). This is caused by an ignition coil failure.
POSSIBLE CAUSE 
  • Open or short in IGN START/ON (RUN) circuit
  • Open coil driver circuit in harness
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to ground in harness
  • Coil driver circuit shorted to PWR
  • Damaged ignition coil
  • Damaged PCM
HINT  Ignition Coil Description 
  • Coil packs come in a tower configuration with two adjacent coil towers sharing a common coil (and called a matched pair).
    • For 4 cylinder applications, the matched pairs are 1 and 4, and 2 and 3.
    • For 6 cylinder applications, the matched pairs are 1 and 5, 2 and 6, and 3 and 4.
  • When the coil is fired by the PCM, spark is delivered to a matched pair of towers to their respective spark plugs.
    • The spark plugs are fired simultaneously and are paired so that as one fires on the compression stroke, the other spark plug fires on the exhaust stroke.
    • The next time the coil is fired, the situation is reversed with the next pair of spark plugs being fired according to the engine firing order.

DTC P0351, P0352, P0353, P0354 INTEGRATED IGNITION COIL 1, 2, 3, OR 4 FAILURE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
  • Was the PCM quick test performed?
Yes Go to next step.
No Perform PCM quick test. See PCM QUICK TEST  .
2 DETERMINE WHICH COIL IS NOT FIRING
NOTE:
  • Electronic ignition engine timing is entirely controlled by the PCM. Electronic ignition timing is NOT adjustable. Do not attempt to check base timing. You will receive false readings.
  • Determine which coil is not firing using information from the table at the beginning of this test.
  • Record cylinder, coil and PCM pin number from the table.
  • Have the cylinder number, coil driver and PCM pin number been recorded? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Obtain required information.
3 CHECK IGN START/RUN VOLTAGE TO COIL PACK
  • Disconnect coil.
  • Key on, engine off (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage between IGN START/ON (RUN) circuit at the ignition coil harness connector and ground.
  • Key OFF.
  • Is voltage greater than 10.0 V? 
Yes Go to next step.
No IGN START/ON (RUN) circuit fault.
Verify integrity of fuse 11 in engine compartment fuse box. If OK, repair open circuit.
If fuse is damaged, check IGN START/ON (RUN) circuit for short to ground. Repair as necessary.
Go to step 12.
4 CHECK FUNCTIONALITY OF SUSPECT COIL DRIVER (CD) CIRCUIT
  • Connect test light between IGN START/ON (RUN) and suspect CD circuit (use the table at the beginning of this test) at the ignition coil harness connector.
  • Disable fuel pump by disconnecting inertia fuel shutoff switch.
  • Observe test light while cranking engine.
  • Does test lamp blink consistently? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Go to next step.
5 CHECK SUSPECT CD CIRCUIT FOR OPEN IN HARNESS
  • Disconnect PCM.
  • Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.
  • Measure resistance of suspect CD circuit between PCM test pin (determined from the table) and ignition coil harness connector.
  • Is resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair open circuit.
Go to step 12.
6 CHECK SUSPECT CD CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VPWR IN HARNESS
  • Key on, engine off (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage of suspect CD circuit between PCM test pin (determined from the table) and ground.
  • Key OFF.
  • Is voltage less than 1.0 V? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair short circuit.
Go to step 12.
7 CHECK SUSPECT CD CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO GROUND IN HARNESS
  • Disconnect WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Measure resistance of suspect CD circuit between PCM test pin (determined from the table) and ground.
  • Is resistance greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair short circuit.
After repair, Go to step 9 to check for damaged coil.
8 PERFORM INTERMITTENT TEST ON SUSPECT CD CIRCUIT HARNESS
  • Connect digital multimeter to suspect CD circuit between PCM test pin (determined from the table) and the ignition coil harness connector.
  • Wiggle and bend CD harness from PCM harness connector to ignition coil harness connector.
  • Does resistance fluctuate during wiggle test? 
Yes Repair intermittent fault in harness.
Go to step 12.
No Replace PCM.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
After repair, Go to next step to check for damaged coil.
9 CHECK SUSPECT PRIMARY COIL FOR OPEN
  • Measure resistance of suspect coil between CD and IGN START/ON (RUN) circuits at ignition coil connector.
  • Is resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 12.
No Replace ignition coil.
See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L for 2.3L engine.
0See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L for 3.0L engine.
See IGNITION COIL REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L for 4.0L engine.
Go to step 12.
10 CHECK SUSPECT PRIMARY COIL FOR OPEN
  • Measure resistance between suspect CD and IGN START/ON (RUN) circuits at ignition coil connector.
  • Is resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Replace ignition coil.
See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L for 2.3L engine.
See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L for 3.0L engine.
See IGNITION COIL REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L for 4.0L engine.
Go to step 12.
11 CHECK SUSPECT SECONDARY COIL FOR OPEN
  • Remove both plug wires from ignition coil of suspect cylinder.
  • Measure resistance of suspected coil driver between terminals.
  • Is resistance between 11.5K and 15.5K ohms for 2.3L and 4.0L or between 8.6K and 11.1K ohms for 3.0L? 
Yes If DTC P0350 is present:
See IGNITION COIL PRIMARY CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION  .
If no additional ignition DTCs are present:
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 4: INTERMITTENT .
No Replace ignition coil.
See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L for 2.3L engine.
See IGNITION COIL PACK REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L for 3.0L engine.
See IGNITION COIL REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L for 4.0L engine.
Go to next step.
12 DRIVE CYCLE
  • Connect all disconnected connectors.
  • Clear DTCs from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Perform misfire monitor drive cycle. See DRIVE CYCLES .
  • Retrieve pending code.
  • Is same DTC present? 
Yes Replace PCM.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
Go to next step.
No Go to next step.
13 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTCs COMPLETED
  • Perform PCM quick test.
  • Is any DTC present? 
Yes Go to applicable DTC inspection. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
No Troubleshooting is complete.
