DTC P0443 DETECTION CONDITION & POSSIBLE CAUSES

DTC P0443 EVAPORATIVE (EVAP) EMISSION CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID MALFUNCTION
DETECTION CONDITION
  • P0443 indicates the signal moved outside the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified purge duty cycle by powertrain control module (PCM) command.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
  • VPWR circuit open
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to GND
  • Damaged EVAP canister purge valve
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit open
  • EVAP canister purge valve circuit shorted to VPWR
  • Damaged PCM

DTC P0443 DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE

DTC P0443 EVAPORATIVE (EVAP) EMISSION CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID MALFUNCTION
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1
  • Was the PCM quick test performed?
Yes The fault that produced continuous memory DTC P0443 (without KOEO or KOER P0443) can be intermittent.
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 4: INTERMITTENT .
Replace PCM after determining fault is not intermittent.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
If KOEO or KOER P0443 is also present, Go to next step.
No Perform PCM quick test. See PCM QUICK TEST  .
2 CHECK FOR VPWR TO EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect EVAP canister purge valve.
  • Key on, engine off (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage between VPWR at the EVAP canister purge valve harness connector and battery ground.
  • Key OFF.
  • Is voltage greater than 10.5 V?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair open in VPWR harness.
Go to step 7.
3 CHECK EVAP CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID RESISTANCE
NOTE:
  • EVAP canister purge valve resistance reading must be taken with engine cooled down.
  • Measure resistance between EVAPCPV and VPWR on the EVAP canister purge valve.
  • Is the resistance between 30 and 38 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No Replace evaporative (EVAP) emission canister purge valve.
See CANISTER PURGE VALVE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
Go to step 7.
4 CHECK RESISTANCE OF EVAPCPV CIRCUIT
  • Disconnect PCM.
  • Install breakout box, leave PCM disconnected.
  • Measure resistance of EVAPCPV between PCM test pin 56 and the EVAP canister purge valve harness connector.
  • Is the resistance less than 5.0 ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair open circuit.
Go to step 7.
5 CHECK EVAP CANISTER PURGE VALVE CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO PWR GND
  • Disconnect scan tool.
  • Measure the resistance between PCM test pin 56 (EVAP) and PCM test pin 103 (PWR GND).
  • Is each resistance greater than 10K ohms?
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair short circuit.
Go to step 7.
6 CHECK EVAPCPV CIRCUIT FOR SHORT TO VPWR
  • Key on, engine off (KOEO).
  • Measure voltage between PCM test pin 56 (EVAP) and PCM test pin 103 (PWR GND).
  • Key OFF.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10.5 V?
Yes Repair short circuit.
Go to next step.
No Replace PCM. Shorted VPWR in the PCM.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
Go to next step.
7 VERIFY TROUBLESHOOTING OF DTCs COMPLETED
  • Connect all disconnected connectors.
  • Clear DTCs from PCM memory using WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Perform PCM quick test.
  • Is same DTC present?
Yes Replace PCM.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
Repeat PCM quick test.
No If any other DTC is present, Go to applicable DTC inspection. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
If no DTC is present, troubleshooting is complete.
