Water Pump Removal / Installation - 4.0L

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. See BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  2. Drain engine coolant. See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT - 4.0L  .
  3. Remove cooling fan blade and clutch. See COOLING FAN AND CLUTCH REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L  .
  4. Remove the bolts and position the fan shroud out of the way.
  5. Remove the drive belt. See DRIVE BELT REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 4.0L .
  6. Remove the belt idler pulley.

  7. Slide the water bypass hose clamp back.

  8. Disconnect the heater hose at the water pump.
    1. Release the clamp.
    2. Remove the hose.

  9. Disconnect the lower radiator hose at the water pump.
    1. Release the clamp.
    2. Remove the hose.

  10. Remove the water pump pulley.

  11. Remove the water pump.

  12. Clean all the sealing surfaces.
    CAUTION:
    • Use care when scraping the water pump-to-engine block mating surfaces. Gouges in the aluminum could form leak paths.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
