Transfer Case Electronic Shift Pinpoint Test 3: Vehicle Does Not Shift Between 2WD And 4WD Modes Correctly

TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 3 CHART - VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 2WD AND 4WD MODES CORRECTLY

PIN POINT TEST 3 VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 2WD AND 4WD MODES CORRECTLY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE POWER AND GROUND
  • Was Pinpoint Test 2 carried out? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No Go to TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 2: NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE  .
2 REVIEW THE DTCs Retrieve 4WD control module self-test DTCs with WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Are any DTCs retrieved? 
Yes If DTC B1355 or B1555, Go to step 17. If DTC P1812 or P1815, Go to step 3. If DTC P1849, P1853, P1857, P1861, P1867 or P1891, Go to step 11.
No Go to step 3.
3 CHECK THE 4WD SWITCH AND MONITOR THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE PID 4X4_SW
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Monitor the 4WD control module PID 4X4_SW while cycling the 4WD switch through 2WD, 4WD HIGH and 4WD LOW.
  • Do the 4WD control module PID values agree with the 4WD switch positions? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to step 4.
4 CHECK ALL POSITIONS OF 4WD SWITCH
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect 4WD switch 0318-01.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD switch 0318-01 pin 2 and pin 3 component side, as follows:
    • With 4WD switch in 2WD position the resistance should be 3,705-4,095 ohms.
    • With 4WD switch in 4WD-HIGH position the resistance should be 1,045-1,155 ohms.
    • With 4WD switch in 4WD-LOW position the resistance should be 342-378 ohms.
  • Are the resistances within the specified values? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Install a new 4WD switch. Go to TRANSFER CASE MODE SELECT SWITCH REMOVAL / INSTALLATION , .
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/LB) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Disconnect 4WD control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03.
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 1, circuit (Y/LB), harness side.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
No Go to step 6.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/LB) FOR OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD switch 0318-01 pin 3, circuit (Y/LB), harness side and 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 1, circuit (O), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (W/LB) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 5, circuit (W/LB), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
No Go to step 8.
8 CHECK CIRCUIT (W/LB) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 5, circuit (W/LB), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
9 CHECK CIRCUIT (W/LB) FOR OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD switch 0318-01 pin 2, circuit (W/LB), harness side and 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 5, circuit (W/LB), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
10 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W), CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Disconnect 4WD control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03 if not already disconnected.
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 4, circuit Y/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 13, circuit O/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 7, circuit BR/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 15, circuit W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 11, circuit V/Y, harness side and ground.
  • Is there any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs. and repeat the self-test.
No Go to step 11.
11 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W), CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect transfer case assembly connector 0318-04.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 4, circuit Y/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 13, circuit O/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 7, circuit BR/W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 15, circuit W, harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 11, circuit V/Y, harness side and ground.
  • Are all the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 12
No Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
12 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W) FOR OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 6, circuit (Y/W), harness side and 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 4, circuit (Y/W), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 13.
No Repair the circuit.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
13 CHECK CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module connector 0318-03 pin 13, circuit O/W, harness side and transfer case connector 0318-04 pin 3, circuit O/W, harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module connector 0318-03 pin 7, circuit BR/W, harness side and transfer case connector 0318-04 pin 2, circuit BR/W, harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module connector 0318-02 pin 15, circuit W, harness side and transfer case connector 0318-04 pin 1, circuit W, harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD control module connector 0318-02 pin 11, circuit V/Y, harness side and transfer case connector 0318-04 pin 5, circuit V/Y, harness side.
  • Are all resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 14.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
14 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (O) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (O), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
No Go to step 15
15 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (O) FOR OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 4, circuit (Y), harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (O), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 7, circuit (O), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 16
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
16 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (O) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the 4WD control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03 if not already disconnected.
  • Disconnect the transfer case assembly connector 0318-04 if not already disconnected.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (O), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 17
No Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
17 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/Y), CIRCUIT (GY/Y) AND CIRCUIT (DG/LG) FOR VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit (GY), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 9, circuit (GY/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 2, circuit (DG/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Are all the voltages over 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 18
No Repair the circuit(s) in question.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
18 CHECK CIRCUIT (O) FOR VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4WD control module 0318-02 pin 1, circuit (O), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage between 9 and 16 volts? 
Yes Go to step 19
No Test the charging system.
19 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4WD CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
  • Check for corrosion or pushed out pins at the 4WD control module connectors and the transfer case assembly connector.
  • Connect the 4WD control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03 and the transfer case assembly connector 0318-04.

    Verify that they are fully seated.

  • Operate the system and verify if a concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Go to step 20
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
20 CHECK THE CONTACT PLATE ENCODER SWITCH
  • Key ON, engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Monitor the 4WD switch PIDs 2WD and 4WD HIGH.
  • Monitor contact plate PIDs PLATE_A, PLATE_B, PLATE_C and PLATE_D.
  • Cycle the 4WD switch to 2WD and 4WD HIGH two times.
NOTE:
  • Contact plate PIDs can only be read for approximately two seconds. To continue reading PIDs, cycle the 4WD switch again.
  • Compare the contact plate PID values for each shift position selected by the 4WD switch. See the 4WD PID table below.
  • Do the contact plate PID values agree with the 4WD switch PIDs? 
Yes Go to step 21
No Install a new transfer case shift motor. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION . Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
If still inoperative, install an new 4WD control module. See 4WD CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
21 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE
  • Key OFF.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Using a wrench, manually shift the transfer case sector shaft to the full clockwise (2WD) direction while turning the rear driveshaft.
  • Engage the parking brake.
  • Rotate the front drive driveshaft.
  • Does the front driveshaft turn? 
Yes Go to step 22
No Repair the transfer case as necessary.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
22 CHECK THE SECTOR SHAFT TURNING EFFORT
  • The transfer case has three detented shift positions. The fully clockwise position is 2WD, the next position is 4WD HIGH and the full counter clockwise position is 4WD LOW. Normal operation should not take more than 45 Nm (33 ft-lb) to manually shift the transfer case.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Using a torque wrench, manually shift the transfer case sector shaft to the 4WD HIGH detent position while turning the rear driveshaft.
  • Did the torque required to shift exceed 45 Nm (33 ft-lb)? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 23
23 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT TO 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW
  • Apply the parking brake.
  • Rotate the front driveshaft.
  • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
No Install a new electronic shift motor. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT MOTOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
If still inoperative, install a new 4WD control module. See 4WD CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
