PINPOINT TEST 2 HARD START, LONG CRANK, ERRATIC START AND ERRATIC CRANK DESCRIPTION

PINPOINT TEST 2 HARD START / LONG CRANK / ERRATIC START / ERRATIC CRANK
DESCRIPTION 
  • Starter cranks engine at normal speed but engine requires excessive cranking time before start
  • Battery in normal condition
PINPOINT TEST 2 HARD START, LONG CRANK, ERRATIC START AND ERRATIC CRANK INSPECTION & ACTION

STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 PRELIMINARY CHECKS
NOTE:
  • Confirm that the correct starting procedure was used by the customer before proceeding with diagnosis.
  • Perform the following preliminary checks:
    • Vacuum leaks
    • Fuel quality (concerns such as proper octane, contamination, winter/summer blend)
    • Intake air system (tubes)
    • Air cleaner (restrictions)
    • Battery condition and starter current draw
  • Are all checks OK? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair as necessary.
Verify symptom no longer exists.
2 PERFORM PCM QUICK TEST
  • Are any DTCs displayed during continuous memory, key on engine off (KOEO) or key on engine running (KOER) self-tests? 
Yes Check for cause.
See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX - POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) .
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK SECONDARY IGNITION SYSTEM
  • Remove the fuel pump fuse.
  • Is a strong blue spark visible at each disconnected high-tension lead while cranking engine? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Check camshaft position (CMP) sensor signal at powertrain control module (PCM).
See CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR MALFUNCTION .
If CMP sensor is OK, check following:
See SPARK PLUG REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
If CMP sensor is not OK, replace.
See CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 2.3L for 2.3L engine.
See CAMSHAFT POSITION (CMP) SENSOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION - 3.0L for 3.0L and 4.0L engines.
4 CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Yes Go to next step.
No If pressure is greater than 448 kPa (65 psi) for the 3.0L/4.0L, 380 kPa (55 psi) for the 2.3L:
replace fuel pump.
See FUEL PUMP REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
If pressure is less than 207 kPa (30 psi) for the 3.0L/4.0L, 240 kPa (35 psi) for the 2.3L:
check fuel supply line for restriction.
5 CHECK FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM Yes Check injector for leakage.
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 11: FUEL INJECTOR INSPECTION .
Replace any leaking injectors. Go to step 12.
If injector OK, Go to step 6.
No Check fuel supply line for restriction.
6 CHECK EXHAUST SYSTEM
  • Check exhaust system. See ENGINE COMPONENT TEST  . See vacuum test.
  • Is there a restriction in the exhaust system? 
Yes Service as necessary.
No Go to next step.
7 IS ENGINE OVERHEATING (HOT START CONCERN ONLY)?
  • For hot start concerns, does engine appear to be overheating? 
Yes See SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING CHART - ENGINE COOLING  .
No Go to next step.
8 CHECK PCV SYSTEM
  • Remove positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and shake it.
  • Does PCV valve rattle? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Replace PCV valve.
See GENERAL PINPOINT TEST 11: FUEL INJECTOR INSPECTION .
9 CHECK EVAP SYSTEM
  • Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature.
  • Disconnect crankcase ventilation hose.
  • Place a stiff piece of paper over the hose end.
  • Does vacuum hold the paper? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Check evaporative emission system as follows:
Disconnect evaporative hose and place a stiff piece of paper over the hose. Does vacuum hold paper?
If yes, go to DTC P0455.
See EVAPORATIVE EMISSION (EVAP) SYSTEM MALFUNCTION .
If no, check for vacuum leak in PCV system, oil cap, PCV valve, rocker cover for bolt/torque/gasket leak.
10 CHECK INTAKE AIR SYSTEM
  • Check for contaminated mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
  • Is there any contamination? 
Yes Replace MAF sensor.
See MASS AIR FLOW/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (MAF/IAT) SENSOR REMOVAL / INSTALLATION .
No Go to next step.
11 CHECK STARTING SYSTEM Yes Go to next step.
No Service as required.
