Possible Causes

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING INDICATOR NEVER/ALWAYS ON PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 8 ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
  • Key ON.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool:
    • Instrument Cluster Active Command
  • Select the instrument cluster warning lamps active command. Trigger the all lamps active command ON and then OFF. Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate when triggered on, and turn off when triggered off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 10.
2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SELF-TESTS
  • Check the recorded instrument cluster DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-test.
  • Is DTC C1221 present? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No If the ABS warning indicator is never on, go to next step.
If the ABS warning indicator is always on, go to step 6.
3 VERIFY THE ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect: ABS module 0413-102.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK CIRCUIT (DG) FOR VOLTAGE
  • Measure the voltage between the ABS module 0413-102 pin 17, (DG), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Go to next step.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (DG) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect; Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 18, (DG), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair circuit (DG) for a short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Is the brake warning indicator illuminated? 
Yes See COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK for diagnosis of the communication network.
No Go to next step.
7 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND THE ABS MODULE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module 0413-102.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101,0922-102.
  • Connect: ABS module 0413-102.
  • Connect: Instrument cluster 0922-101, 0922-102.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator prove-out correctly? 
Yes The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
No Go to next step.
8 CHECK THE ABS MODULE CIRCUIT (DG) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module 0413-102.
  • Key ON.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the ABS module 0413-102 pin 17, (DG), harness side and ground.
  • Observe the ABS warning indicator.
  • Does the ABS warning indicator turn off? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Remove the jumper wire. Go to next step.
9 CHECK CIRCUIT (DG) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 18, (DG), harness side and the ABS module 0413-102 pin 17, (DG), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (DG) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
11 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the ABS module connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the ABS module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new ABS module. See 04-13 ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
