PINPOINT TEST 16 BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON STEP INSPECTION ACTION
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCs) FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND SJB SELF-TESTS
  • Check the recorded instrument cluster and SJB DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are DTCs present? 
Yes If instrument cluster DTC C1226 is present, go to step 10. If SJB DTC B2901 is present, go to step 3.
No Go to next step.
2 DETERMINE THE CONDITION
  • Key ON.
  • Apply and release the parking brake while monitoring the SJB parking brake switch PID.
  • Do the PIDS agree? 
Yes If always on, go to step 4. If inoperative, go to step 12.
No If always on, go to next step. If inoperative, go to step 7.
3 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Parking brake switch 0918-201.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Does the brake warning indicator turn off? 
Yes Install a new parking brake switch. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK THE SJB FOR OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: SJB J-2280c.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Does the brake warning indicator turn off? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 6.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/Y) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between the SJB J-2280C pin 17, circuit (R/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No Repair circuit (R/Y) for a short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (V/W) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 20, circuit (V/W), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 16.
No Repair circuit (V/W) for a short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Parking brake switch 0918-201.
  • Measure the resistance between the parking brake switch 0918-201 pin 2, circuit (B), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (B) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
8 CHECK THE PARKING BRAKE INPUT
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the parking brake switch 0918-201 pin 1, circuit (R/Y), harness side and the parking brake switch 0918-201 pin 2, circuit (B), harness side.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? 
Yes Install a new parking brake switch. Test the system for normal operation.
No Remove the jumper wire. Go to next step.
9 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/Y) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: SJBJ-2280C.
  • Measure the resistance between the parking brake switch 0918-201 pin 1, circuit (R/Y), harness side and the SJB J-2280c pin 17, circuit (R/Y), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No Repair circuit (R/Y) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
10 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module 0413-102.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Does the brake warning indicator turn on? 
Yes Go to step 18.
No Go to next step.
11 CHECK CIRCUIT (LB/B) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 16, circuit (LB/B), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 16.
No Repair circuit (LB/B) for a short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
12 CHECK THE SJB OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the SJB J-2280C pin 18, circuit (V/W) harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the brake warning indicator illuminate? 
Yes Remove the jumper wire. Go to step 17.
No Remove the jumper wire. Go to next step.
13 CHECK CIRCUIT (V/W) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 20, circuit (V/W), harness side and the SJB J-2280c pin 18, circuit (V/W), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 16.
No Repair circuit (V/W) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
14 CHECK THE ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: ABS module 0413-102.
    NOTE:
    • If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to voltage.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the ABS module C135 pin 27, circuit (LB/B), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the brake warning indicator.
  • Does the brake warning indicator continue to illuminate? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 18.
15 CHECK CIRCUIT (LB/B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 16, circuit (LB/B), harness side and the ABS module 0413-102 pin 27, circuit (LB/B), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (LB/B) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
16 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
17 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new SJB. See SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
18 CHECK FOR CORRECT ABS MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect the ABS module connector.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect the ABS module connector and make sure it seats correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new ABS module. See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) MODULE . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
