Possible Causes

CAUTION:
  • Use the correct probe adaptor(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adaptor(s) may damage the connector.
CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR NEVER ON PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 7 CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM WARNING INDICATOR FOR CORRECT OPERATION
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the charging system warning indicator.
  • Key in START.
  • Does the charging system warning indicator illuminate when the ignition switch is in the ON position, and turn off when the ignition switch is in the RUN position? 
Yes The system is operating correctly at this time.
No Go to next step.
2 CHECK CIRCUIT (LG/R) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Generator 0117-01.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • For 2.3L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, (LG/R), harness side and the generator 0117-01 pin 1, (LG/R), harness side.
  • For 3.0L and 4.0L engines, measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, (LG/R), harness side and the generator 0117-01 pin 1, (LG/R), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Repair circuit (LG/R) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK CIRCUIT (LG/R) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 20, (LG/R), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Is voltage present? 
Yes Repair circuit (LG/R) for a short to voltage. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to next step.
4 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
    • incorrectly installed bulb sockets
    • burnt-out bulbs
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
