Possible Causes

TACHOMETER INOPERATIVE PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 6 TACHOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CARRY OUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE DIAGNOSTIC TOOL
  • Key ON.
  • Enter the following diagnostic mode on the diagnostic tool:
    • Instrument Cluster Active Command
  • Select the instrument cluster gauges active command. Trigger, monitor, and sweep the gauges. Observe the tachometer gauge.
  • Does the tachometer gauge sweep correctly? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 4.
2 CHECK THE CLEAN TACH OUT (CTO) SIGNAL TO THE TACHOMETER
  • Key in START.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • Key in START.
  • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 6, (T/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage between 5 and 8 volts? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK CIRCUIT (T/Y) FOR AN OPEN OR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Disconnect: PCM 0140-175.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 6, (T/Y), harness side and the PCM 0140-175 pin 48, (T/Y), harness side; and between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 6, (T/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the PCM, and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground? 
Yes Go to step 6.
No Repair circuit (T/Y) for an open or short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
4 CHECK CIRCUIT (T/Y) FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 6, (T/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Is voltage present? 
Yes Repair circuit (T/Y) for a short to voltage. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 6.
5 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
6 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect the PCM connector.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect the PCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL / INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
