Possible Causes

AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR NEVER/ALWAYS ON PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 20 AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LAMP OPERATION
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the air bag warning indicator lamp prove-out.
  • Does the air bag lamp prove-out correctly? 
Yes The system is operating correctly at this time.
No Go to next step.
2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND RCM SELF-TESTS
  • Check the recorded RCM DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
  • Are DTCs present? 
Yes See AIR BAG AND SAFETY BELT PRETENSIONER SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) to continue diagnosis of the DTCs. Test the system for normal operation.
No If the air bag warning indicator never on, go to next step. If the air bag warning indicator always on, go to step 6.
3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FOR CORRECT FIT
NOTE:
  • When the instrument cluster is removed, check for correct installation of the warning indicators.
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101,0922-102.
  • Connect: Instrument cluster 0922-101, 0922-102.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the air bag warning indicator.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator prove-out correctly? 
Yes The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
No Go to next step.
4 ISOLATE THE AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC MODULE
  • Key OFF.
  • Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
  • Disconnect: RCM 0810-101.
    NOTE:
    • If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to voltage.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the RCM C2041 pin 20, circuit (B/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the air bag warning indicator.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator illuminate? 
Yes Remove the jumper wire. Go to step 8.
No Remove the jumper wire. Go to next step.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (B/Y) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 13, circuit (B/Y), harness side and the RCM 0810-101 pin 20, circuit (B/Y) harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Repair circuit (B/Y) for an open. Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING . Test the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (B/Y) FOR OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: RCM 0810-101.
  • Key ON.
    NOTE:
    • Make sure the shorting bar is not engaged between pins 20 and 21 on the RCM connector when monitoring the air bag warning indicator.
  • Monitor the air bag warning indicator lamp.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator lamp continue to illuminate? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 8.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (B/Y) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-101.
    NOTE:
    • Make sure the shorting bar is not engaged between pins 20 and 21 on the RCM connector when carrying out this test.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220b pin 13, circuit (B/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Repair circuit (B/Y) for a short to ground. Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING . Test the system for normal operation.
8 CHECK FOR CORRECT RCM OPERATION
  • Disconnect the RCM connector.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
    • incorrectly installed bulb sockets
    • burnt-out bulbs
  • Connect the RCM connector and make sure it seats correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new RCM. Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
9 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Repower the SRS. See DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
