Possible Causes

4WD AND 4WD LOW INDICATOR NEVER/ALWAYS ON PINPOINT TEST REFERENCE

PINPOINT TEST 19 4WD AND 4WD LOW INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 DETERMINE THE CONDITION
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the 4WD indicators.
  • Is a 4WD indicator always on? 
Yes Go to next step.
No Go to step 4.
2 CHECK THE 4WD CONTROL MODULE FOR OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4WD control module 0318-03.
  • Observe the 4WD indicator.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the 4WD indicator turn off? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Go to next step.
3 CHECK CIRCUITS (GY) AND (LB/B) FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 18, circuit (LB/B), harness side and ground; and between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 17, circuit (GY), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair circuit (GY) and (LB/B) for a short to ground. Test the system for normal operation.
4 CHECK THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) OPERATION
  • Verify the operation of the 4WD function.
  • Does the 4WD function correctly? 
Yes If 4WD LOW indicator, go to step 7.
If 4WD indicator, go to next step.
No See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT ON - BOARD DIAGNOSIS to continue diagnosis of the 4WD system.
5 CHECK THE 4WD HIGH INDICATOR OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4WD module 0318-03.
    NOTE:
    • If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to voltage.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the 4WD module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit (GY), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the 4WD HIGH indicator illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Go to next step.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT (GY) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit (GY), harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 17, circuit (GY), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair circuit (GY) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK THE 4WD LOW INDICATOR OPERATION
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4WD module 0318-03.
    NOTE:
    • If the fuse fails, repair the circuit for a short to voltage.
  • Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the 4WD module C281b pin 9, circuit (LB/B), harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the 4WD LOW indicator illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 9.
No Go to next step.
8 CHECK CIRCUIT (LB/B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument cluster 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4WD module 0318-03 pin 9, circuit (LB/B), harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 18, circuit (LB/B), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair circuit (LB/B) for an open. Test the system for normal operation.
9 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4WD MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the 4WD module connectors.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all the 4WD module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new 4WD module. See 4WD CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL / INSTALLATION . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
10 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all the instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • Corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER . Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
