Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda B3000 and 2001 Mazda B3000. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. See DRAINING . Remove radiator. Discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. Remove A/C condenser, if equipped. Plug A/C lines. Remove timing chain and sprockets. See TIMING CHAIN & SPROCKETS . Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove valve covers. See VALVE COVER .
  2. Loosen rocker arm bolts and rotate rocker arms off push rods. Remove push rods and keep push rods in order for installation reference. Remove lifter guide plate retainer. Remove lifter guide plates from lifters.
  3. Remove lifters, keeping them in order. Check camshaft end play. If end play is not within specification, replace thrust plate and inspect camshaft. See CAMSHAFT  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Remove camshaft synchronizer. Remove camshaft thrust plate. Slowly pull camshaft from engine, keeping camshaft in line with camshaft bores.
