Valve Cover - RH Removal/Installation - 4.0L

  1. Drain the cooling system. See ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT - 4.0L .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe.
    • Disconnect the tube.
    • Detach the mass airflow (MAF) sensor wiring pushpin.
    • Loosen the clamps and remove the pipe.

  3. Release the hose clamps and remove the upper radiator hose.

  4. Remove the crankcase breather hose and disconnect the vacuum hose.

  5. If equipped with automatic transmission, remove the nut and position the transmission fluid level indicator and tube assembly aside.

  6. Release the hose clamps and disconnect the hoses.

  7. Release the hose clamps and disconnect the hoses.

  8. Remove the coolant tube bracket bolts.

  9. Release the hose clamp and disconnect the hose. Position the hose aside.

  10. Detach the wiring harness retainer and remove the coolant tube and bracket assembly.

  11. Disconnect the heater hose and position aside.

  12. Disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector and wiring pin-type retainer. Position the wiring aside.

    CAUTION:
    • It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire.
    NOTE:
    • Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct ignition coil terminal. Mark the spark plug wire locations before removing them.
  13. Position the spark plug wires aside.
    1. Disconnect the spark plug wires.
    2. Disconnect the spark plug wire retainer and position the wires aside.

  14. Remove the wiring harness retainer.

  15. Disconnect the fuel injector connectors. Position wiring aside.

  16. Remove the bolts and the valve cover.

    CAUTION:
    • Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths.
  17. Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces. Install a new gasket if necessary.
  18. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
