Valve Cover - LH Removal/Installation - 4.0L

All vehicles 

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. See BATTERY DISCONNECT .
  2. Detach the accelerator cable from the throttle body and the accelerator cable bracket.

  3. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the electrical connector.

  4. Early build vehicles 

  5. Disconnect the vapor hose end from the intake manifold.

  6. Disconnect the vapor hose end and the pin-type retainer and remove the vapor hose.

  7. Late build vehicles 

  8. Disconnect the vapor hose from the intake manifold.

  9. All vehicles 

  10. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  11. Remove the differential pressure feedback exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system.

  12. Remove the EGR vacuum regulator solenoid valve.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
    2. Disconnect the vacuum connection.
    3. Remove the retaining bolts and the solenoid valve.

  13. Disconnect the fuel tube push connect coupling. See FUEL LINE AND VAPOR LINE QUICK DISCONNECT FITTINGS .
  14. Remove the fuel supply tube bracket bolt.

  15. Detach the vapor tube pin-type retainer, if equipped, and remove the fuel tube-to-valve cover bracket bolt. Position the fuel supply tube aside.

  16. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the EGR tube fitting from the EGR valve.

  17. Remove the bolt and position the electrical connector aside. Disconnect the radio interference capacitor electrical connector.

  18. Carry out the following:
    • Detach the two spark plug wire retainers.
      CAUTION:
      • It is important to twist the spark plug wire boots while pulling upward to avoid possible damage to the spark plug wire.
      NOTE:
      • Spark plug wires must be connected to the correct ignition coil terminal. Mark spark plug wire locations before removing them.
    • Disconnect the LH spark plug wires from the ignition coil.

  19. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.

  20. Remove the ignition coil bracket lower bolts.

  21. Remove the ignition coil bracket upper bolts and position the ignition coil aside.

  22. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.

  23. Remove the PCV valve from the valve cover and position aside.

  24. Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors and detach the wire harness pin-type retainer on the valve cover stud.

  25. Remove the bolts and the valve cover.

  26. To install, reverse removal procedure.
