Instrument Cluster Pinpoint Test 19: 4X4 High And 4X4 Low Indicator Is Never On

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PINPOINT TEST 19 - 4X4 HIGH AND 4X4 LOW INDICATOR NEVER ON

PINPOINT TEST 19 4X4 HIGH AND 4X4 LOW INDICATOR IS NEVER ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE (4X4) OPERATION
  • Verify the operation of the 4X4 function.
  • Does the 4X4 function correctly? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No See DTC INDEX -- 4X4 to continue diagnosis of the 4X4 system.
2 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCS FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND SELF-TESTS-4X4 CONTROL MODULE
  • Connect the diagnostic tool.
  • Key ON.
  • Use the recorded results from the 4X4 control module self-test.
  • Are any DTCs recorded? 
Yes If DTC B1342, Go to step 11.
If DTC(s) P1804, P1806, P1808 or P1810, Go to step 3.
No Go to step 3.
3 VERIFY THE INOPERATIVE INDICATOR LAMP
  • Verify the inoperative indicator lamp.
  • Are both the 4x4 HIGH and 4x4 LOW indicators inoperative? 
Yes Go to step 4.
No If the 4x4 LOW indicator is inoperative, Go to step 8.
If the 4x4 HIGH indicator is inoperative, Go to step 5.
4 CHECK CIRCUITS GY AND LB/B FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4X4 Module 0318-03.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 17, circuit GY, harness side and the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit GY, harness side and between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 18, circuit LB/B, and between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 9, circuit LB/B harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the 4X4 module; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground? 
Yes See DTC INDEX -- 4X4 to continue diagnosis of the 4X4 system.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Test the system for normal operation.
5 CHECK THE 4X4 HIGH INDICATOR
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4X4 Module 0318-03.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit GY, harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the 4x4 HIGH indicator illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Go to step 6.
6 CHECK CIRCUIT G FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit GY, harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 17, circuit GY, harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT GY FOR SHORT TO POWER
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 6, circuit GY, harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage indicated? 
Yes Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 12.
8 CHECK THE 4X4 LOW INDICATOR
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4X4 Module 0318-03.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 9, circuit LB/B, harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Does the 4X4 LOW indicator illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Go to step 9.
9 CHECK CIRCUIT LB/B FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster 0922-102.
  • Measure the resistance between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 9, circuit LB/B, harness side and the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 18, circuit LB/B, harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 10.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
10 CHECK CIRCUIT LB/B FOR SHORT TO POWER
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: 4X4 Module 0318-03.
  • Key ON.
  • Measure the voltage between the 4X4 module 0318-03 pin 9, circuit LB/B, harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage indicated? 
Yes Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 12.
11 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4X4 MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all 4X4 module connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all 4X4 module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new 4X4 module. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Clear the DTCs. REPEAT the 4X4 module self-test.
No Go to step 12.
12 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test.
