Transfer Case Electronic Shift Pinpoint Test 4: Vehicle Does Not Shift Between 4WD High And 4WD Low Modes Correctly

TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST CHART (VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4WD HIGH AND 4WD LOW MODES CORRECTLY)

PINPOINT TEST 4 THE VEHICLE DOES NOT SHIFT BETWEEN 4X4 HIGH AND 4X4 LOW MODES CORRECTLY
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 REVIEW THE DTCs
  • Retrieve 4X4 control module self-test DTCs with WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Are any DTCs retrieved? 
Yes For DTC P1816, go to step 3.
For DTC P1819, go to step 4.
For DTC B1483 or B1485, go to step 8.
For DTC P0500, go to step 13.
No Go to step 2.
2 VERIFY THE FUNCTION TEST HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT
  • Was the electronic shift function test carried out? 
Yes Go to step 3.
No Carry out the electronic shift function test. See TRANSFER CASE ELECTRONIC SHIFT PINPOINT TEST 1: ELECTRONIC SHIFT FUNCTIONAL TEST .
3 CHECK THE DIGITAL RANGE SENSOR PID NTRL-SW
  • Monitor 4X4 control module PID NTRL_SW using WDS or equivalent tester.
  • Place the gearshift lever in NEUTRAL.
  • Verify NTRL_SW reads NTRL.
  • Shift the gearshift lever through all positions while monitoring NTRL_SW PID.
  • Does the 4X4 control module PID NTRL_SW read NTRL only for NEUTRAL position? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No Go to step 4.
4 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/W) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the 4X4 control module connector 0318-02.
  • Place the gearshift lever in any position except NEUTRAL.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 16, circuit (R/W), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 5.
No Repair the circuit. Shift the gearshift lever between NEUTRAL and PARK twice. Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/W) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 16, circuit (R/W), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Go to step 6.
6 CHECK DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE (DTR) SENSOR CIRCUIT (R/W) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the DTR sensor connector 0140-05.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 16, circuit (R/W), harness side and DTR sensor 0140-05 pin 8, circuit (R/W), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 8.
No Repair the circuit. Shift the gearshift lever between NEUTRAL and PARK twice. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
7 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/W) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 16, circuit (R/W), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit. Shift the gearshift lever between NEUTRAL and PARK twice. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
No Install a new DTR sensor. See DIGITAL TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Repair the circuit. Shift the gearshift lever between NEUTRAL and PARK twice. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
8 CHECK BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH 4X4 CONTROL MODULE PID
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect the 4X4 control module connector 0318-02.
  • Connect the 4X4 control module connector 0318-03.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Apply the parking brake.
  • Press the brake pedal.
  • Monitor 4X4 control module PID BOO.
  • Does the PID value reflect the vehicle condition? 
Yes Go to step 13.
No Go to step 9.
9 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect 4X4 control module connector 0318-02.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 12, circuit (R/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Is there any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit. Press the brake pedal twice.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
No Go to step 10.
10 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 12, circuit (R/LG), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 11.
No Repair the circuit. Press the brake pedal twice.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
11 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Press and hold the brake pedal.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 12, circuit (R/LG) and ground.
  • Is the voltage at least 10 volts? 
Yes Go to step 12.
No Repair the circuit. Press the brake pedal twice.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
12 CHECK CIRCUIT (R/LG) FOR OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect brake pedal position (BPP) switch 0918-01.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 12, circuit (R/LG), harness side and BPP switch 0918-01 pin 4, circuit (R/LG), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 13.
No Repair the circuit. Press the brake pedal twice.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
13 CHECK THE SPEEDOMETER
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect 4X4 control module connector 0318-02, BPP switch 0918-01, and DTR sensor connector 0140-05.
  • Monitor the 4X4 control module PID VSS2 and the speedometer while driving the vehicle 0 to 88.5 km/h (55mph) at a steady rate.
  • Does the 4X4 control module PID VSS2 agree with the speedometer? 
Yes Go to step 15.
No Go to step 14.
14 CHECK PCM CIRCUIT (GY/B) FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect 4X4 control module connector 0318-03.
  • Disconnect PCM and install Breakout Box. Leave PCM disconnected.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 12, circuit (GY/B), harness side and PCM test pin 68, circuit (GY/B).
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 15.
No Repair the circuit. Drive the vehicle to a speed of 64 km/h (40 mph). Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
15 CHECK THE 4X4 SWITCH WHILE MONITORING THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE PID 4X4 CONTROL MODULE PID 4X4_SW
  • Key OFF.
  • Connect the 4X4 control module connector 0318-03 and the PCM.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Monitor the 4X4 control module PID 4X4_SW while cycling the 4X4 switch through 2WD, 4X4 HIGH, and 4X4 LOW.
  • Does the 4X4 SW PID agree with the 4X4 switch positions? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No Go to step 16.
16 CHECK THE 4X4 SWITCH POSITIONS
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect the 4X4 switch 0318-01.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 switch 0318-01 pin 2 and pin 3, component side. Refer to the following chart.
  • Are the resistances within the specified values? 
Yes Go to step 17.
No Install a new 4X4 switch. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CONTROL SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
17 CHECK FOR CORRECT 4X4 CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
  • Check for corrosion or pushed out pins at the 4X4 control module connectors and the transfer case assembly connector.
  • Connect the 4X4 control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03 and the transfer case assembly connector 0318-04. Verify that they are fully seated.
  • Operate the system and verify if a concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Go to step 18.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
18 CHECK THE CONTACT PLATE ENCODER SWITCH
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Monitor the shift control switch PIDs 2WD and 4X4 HIGH.
  • Monitor contact plate PIDs PLATE A, PLATE_B, PLATE_C and PLATE_D.
  • Cycle the shift control switch to 2WD and 4X4 HIGH two times.
    NOTE:
    • Contact plate PIDs can only be read for approximately two seconds. To continue reading PIDs, cycle the 4X4 switch again.
  • Compare the contact plate PID values for each shift position selected by the 4X4 switch. Refer to the following chart.
  • Do the contact plate PID values agree with the 4X4 switch PIDs? 
YES Go to step 25.
No Go to step 19.
19 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W), CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect 4X4 control module connectors 0318-02 and 0318-03 if not already disconnected.
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 4, circuit (Y/W), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 7, circuit (BR/W), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 13, circuit (O/W), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 11, circuit (V/Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 15, circuit (W), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
No Go to step 20.
20 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W), CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect transfer case assembly connector 0318-04.
  • Measure the resistance between the. following circuits at the 4X4 control module connector pins and ground. Refer to the following chart.
  • Are all the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 21.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
21 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y/W) FOR OPEN
  • Measure the resistance between transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 6, circuit (Y/W), harness side and 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 4, circuit (Y/W), harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 22.
No Repair the circuit. Clear the DTCs arid repeat self-test.
22 CHECK CIRCUIT (O/W), CIRCUIT (BR/W), CIRCUIT (W) AND CIRCUIT (V/Y) FOR AN OPEN
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 13, circuit (O/W), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 3, circuit (O/W), harness side.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-03 pin 17, circuit (BR/W), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 2, circuit (BR/W), harness side.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 15, circuit (W), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 1, circuit (W), harness side.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 11, circuit (V/W), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 5, circuit (V/W), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
YES Go to step 23.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
23 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (O) FOR SHORT TO VOLTAGE
  • Key ON, Engine OFF (KOEO).
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the voltage between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (O), harness side and ground.
  • Is any voltage present? 
Yes Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
No Go to step 24.
24 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (0) FOR OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 4, circuit (Y), harness side.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (0), harness side and transfer case assembly 0318-04 pin 7, circuit (0), harness side.
  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 25.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
25 CHECK CIRCUIT (Y) AND CIRCUIT (0) FOR SHORT TO GROUND
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 17, circuit (Y), harness side and ground.
  • Measure the resistance between 4X4 control module 0318-02 pin 8, circuit (0), harness side and ground.
  • Are the resistances greater than 10K ohms? 
Yes Go to step 26.
No Repair the circuit(s) in question. Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
26 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE
  • Key OFF.
  • Release the parking brake.
  • Using a wrench, manually shift the transfer case sector shaft to the full clockwise (2WD) direction while turning the rear driveshaft.
  • Engage the parking brake.
  • Rotate the front drive driveshaft.
  • Does the front driveshaft turn? 
Yes Go to step 27.
No Repair the transfer case as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
27 CHECK THE SECTOR SHAFT TURNING EFFORT
NOTE:
  • The transfer case has three detented shift positions. The fully clockwise position is 2WD, the next position is 4X4 HIGH and the full counter clockwise position is 4X4 LOW. Normal operation should not take more than 45 Nm (33 ft-lb) to manually shift the transfer case.

  • Release the parking brake.
  • Using a torque wrench, manually shift the transfer case sector shaft to the 4X4 HIGH detent position while turning the rear driveshaft.
  • Did the torque required to shift exceed 45 Nm (33 ft-lb)? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
No Go to step 28.
28 CHECK THE TRANSFER CASE SHIFT TO 4X4 HIGH AND 4X4 LOW
  • Apply the parking brake.
  • Rotate the front driveshaft.
  • Does the front driveshaft rotate? 
Yes Repair the transfer case as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
No Install a new electronic shift motor. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Clear the DTCs and repeat self-test.
If still inoperative/install a new 4X4 control module. See TRANSFER CASE SHIFT CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
