Instrument Cluster Pinpoint Test 20: Air Bag Indicator Is Never/Always On

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PINPOINT TEST 20 - AIR BAG INDICATOR NEVER/ALWAYS ON

PINPOINT TEST 20 AIR BAG INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE AIR BAG WARNING INDICATOR LAMP OPERATION
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the air bag warning indicator lamp prove out.
  • Does the air bag lamp prove out correctly? 
Yes System is operating correctly at this time.
No If the air bag warning indicator is never on, Go to step 2.
If the air bag warning indicator is always on, Go to step 4.
2 CHECK CIRCUIT B/Y
  • Deactivate the restraint control supplemental air bag system.
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Restraint Control Module 0810-101.
  • Key ON.
  • Monitor the air bag warning indicator lamp.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator lamp illuminate? 
Yes Go to step 6.
No Go to step 3.
3 CHECK CIRCUIT B/Y FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 13, circuit B/Y harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
4 ISOLATE THE AIR BAG DIAGNOSTIC MODULE
  • Key OFF.
  • Deactivate the restraint control supplemental air bag system.
  • Disconnect: Restraint Control Module 0810-101.
  • Connect a fused (10A) jumper wire between the restraint control module 0810-101 pin 20, circuit B/Y harness side and ground.
  • Key ON.
  • Observe the air bag warning indicator.
  • Does the air bag warning indicator turn off? 
Yes Repair the supplemental restraint system.
See AIR BAG SYSTEM ON - BOARD DIAGNOSIS
No Go to step 5.
5 CHECK CIRCUIT B/Y FOR AN OPEN
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect: Instrument Cluster 0922-101.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 13, circuit B/Y harness side and the restraint control module 0810-101 pin 20, circuit B/Y harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 7.
No Repair the circuit. Test the system for normal operation.
6 CHECK FOR CORRECT RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE OPERATION
  • Disconnect all restraint control module connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all restraint control module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new restraint control module. See RESTRAINTS CONTROL MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION . Clear the DTCs. Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
  • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. REPEAT the instrument cluster self-test.
