Instrument Cluster Instrument Cluster Pinpoint Test 6: Tachometer Is Inoperative

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PINPOINT TEST 6 - TACHOMETER INOPERATIVE

PINPOINT TEST 6 TACHOMETER IS INOPERATIVE
STEP INSPECTION ACTION
1 CHECK THE GROUND TO THE TACHOMETER
  • Key OFF.
  • Disconnect instrument cluster connector 0922-102.
  • Check the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 1 circuit B, harness side and ground and instrument cluster 0922-101 pin 3 circuit B/W, harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Go to step 2.
No Repair the circuit in question. Test the system for normal operation.
2 CHECK CIRCUIT T/Y FOR AN OPEN
  • Disconnect the PCM connector 0140-175.
  • Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster 0922-102 pin 6, circuit T/Y, harness side and the PCM 0140-175 pin 48, circuit T/Y, harness side.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? 
Yes Reconnect the PCM. Go to step 3.
No Repair T/Y wire. Test the system for normal operation.
3 CHECK CLEAN TACH OUT (CTO) SIGNAL TO TACHOMETER
  • Start engine.
  • Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster connector 0922-102 pin 6, circuit T/Y harness side and ground.
  • Is the voltage between 5 and 8 volts? 
Yes Go to step 4.
No Go to step 5.
4 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PRINTED CIRCUIT
  • Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
  • Check for:
    • corrosion
    • pushed-out pins
  • Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Replace the instrument cluster.
See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
5 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION
  • Check PCM connector for:
  • corrosion
  • pushed-out pins
  • Connect PCM connector and make sure it is seated correctly.
  • Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present? 
Yes Install a new PCM.
See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .
Test the system for normal operation.
No The system is operating correctly at this time.
The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
Clear the DTCs and repeat the self-test.
