On-Vehicle Tests: Battery
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Protege5, 2003 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Protege5, and 2002 Mazda Protege. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Inspect the battery in the following procedure:
- Measure open circuit voltage of battery. If battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts, go to step 3 . If battery voltage is less than 12.4 volts, go to next step.
- Quick charge for 30 minutes and recheck voltage. If battery voltage is more than 12.4 volts, go to next step. If battery voltage is less than 12.4 volts, replace battery.
- Apply load test to battery using a battery load tester and record battery voltage after 15 seconds. See LOAD TEST SPECIFICATIONS and LOAD TEST MINIMUM VOLTAGE tables. If voltage is more than specified, battery is okay. If voltage is less than specified, replace battery.
