WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Mazda Protege5 and 2003 Mazda Protege. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Before deploying seat belt pretensioner, inspect operating condition of Deployment Tool (49 H066 002). See INSPECTING DEPLOYMENT TOOL . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  2. Remove appropriate seat belt pretensioner. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Position seat belt pretensioner inside of scrap tire. Using strong wire, attach seat belt pretensioner to tire, wrapping wire around tire and seat belt pretensioner least 4 times.
  3. Stack 2 scrap tires under tire which pretensioner is attached. Connect deployment tool to seat belt pretensioner connector. Place another tire and then a scrap rim and tire assembly on top of entire stack and tie stack together with strong rope. Connect Red clip of deployment tool to positive battery terminal and Black clip of deployment tool to negative battery terminal. Verify deployment tool Red light is on.
  4. Ensure all persons are at least 20 feet (6.1 m) from pretensioner. Press deployment tool activation switch to deploy seat belt pretensioner. Because of heat generated from seat belt pretensioner deployment, wait at least 15 minutes before handling deployed seat belt pretensioner. Place deployed seat belt pretensioner in plastic bag, seal bag and disposed of like any other part.
